Salary Range: $81,000 - $178,000. The position on the scale will be based on years of teaching experience and education.

The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. We are seeking a 4th Grade Teacher and House Advisor to join the Middle School for the 2026-2027 school year. The Dalton Middle School encompasses Grades 4-8 and the 4th Grade team has five House Advisors that each work with approximately 18 students. Our 4th grade House Advisors teach an integrated Language Arts and Social Studies class, co-teach Math with specialists, and support their advisees through our House curriculum.
The ideal candidate is passionate and knowledgeable about progressive elementary and early middle school education and differentiation. We seek teachers who are enthusiastic about working collaboratively to improve pedagogy and to design innovative curriculum that addresses the whole child. Curricular content in Grade 4 includes a yearlong study of European and Chinese immigration, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, literary studies and analysis, and the writing process, which incorporates links to literature and social studies explorations. The 4th grade team strives to select texts and documents that reflect the diversity of our world.
Responsibilities:
- Teach Language Arts and Social Studies (LASS).
- Collaboratively develop LASS curriculum with other House Advisors, Learning Support Specialists, and Department Chairs.
- Team Teach Math with a member of the Math Department in a heterogenous, differentiated math classroom setting.
- House Advise, serving as the primary point of contact for the students and parents.
- Collaborate with other Grade 4 House Advisors to develop House curriculum on grade-specific topics and community building programs. House lessons cover a wide range of topics, including social-emotional learning, health and wellness activities, and lessons on digital communication and citizenship
- Communicate frequently about student progress, including leading family conferences twice a year.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Education or a related field.
- Experience teaching upper Elementary/early Middle School grades (3-5), in Language Arts, Social Studies and Math.
- Experience developing humanities curriculum.
- Places value in using an asset based, whole child approach to supporting students.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong commitment to collaborate in support of students and the curriculum.
