General Description
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing professional sanitarian services and inspection work in Hidalgo County. Enforces public laws and regulations as part of an environmental sanitation program. Exercises no supervision.
Examples of Work Performed
Inspects food and drink establishments, including bakeries, public eating places, grocery stores, meat markets, food warehouses, and other miscellaneous food establishments.
Conducts miscellaneous Inspections of facilities (i.e. Foster Homes and Day Care Centers) for compliance with pertinent regulations and recommends issuance or denial of permit to operate.
Inspects establishments and sites with regards to water, sewage, and solid waste.
Performs special and miscellaneous duties as required, including sampling of products, giving talks to groups, and completing sanitation surveys.
Communicates environmental health information with the public and demonstrates sensitivity to people and their needs.
Performs detailed tasks concerned with rodent, fly and mosquito control projects.
Prepares written reports on inspection findings; outlines any violation of regulations; recommends corrective measures to be taken or possible court action.
Investigates food poisoning outbreaks at the direction of supervisory personnel.
Processes On-site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) permit applications and fees for new and existing OSSF systems.
Performs inspections as part of the OSSF permitting or complaint investigation process.
Address general customer inquiries, including system records information requests, permitting and fee process inquiries, technical inquiries, on types of systems and regulatory compliance questions.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nutrition, consumer health, environmental health, sanitation or related field.
Three (3) years of experience in conducting inspections, investigations and environmental sanitation work.
Must obtain Sanitarian Registration or must obtain within six (6) months of employment.
Must have OSSF Designated Representative License or must obtain within six (6) months of employment.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration:
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Knowledge of educational policies, disease control, and other health related technical information.
Knowledge of related health principles and techniques.
Knowledge of biology and chemistry fundamentals.
Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
Ability to apply technical knowledge and follow proper enforcement of county rules and regulations.
Ability to identify and respond to public issues and concerns.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position.

Pay: $59,585.00 per year
