About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support the execution of civil/site construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role works directly with Project Managers to keep projects organized, on schedule, and moving forward across scopes including grading, underground utilities, concrete, and asphalt.
This is a hands-on role ideal for someone looking to grow into a Project Manager position while gaining real exposure to all aspects of civil construction.
- Support management of civil/site projects from start to finish
- Prepare, track, and manage submittals to ensure timely approvals
- Generate and follow up on RFIs with engineers and design teams
- Assist with change orders including takeoffs, pricing coordination, and tracking
- Maintain project logs (RFIs, submittals, change orders, etc.)
- Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers on scope, schedule, and deliveries
- Review plans and specifications to identify discrepancies or constructability issues
- Assist with procurement of materials and subcontractor scopes
- Support scheduling efforts and help identify potential delays
- Track project costs and assist with budget updates and forecasting
- Help compile as-builts and closeout documentation
- Communicate with clients, engineers, and inspectors to support project progress
- Ensure field teams have current drawings, approved submittals, and necessary documentation
- Projects stay organized, documented, and on track
- Submittals, RFIs, and change orders are handled quickly and accurately
- Issues are identified early and communicated clearly
- Field and office teams stay aligned and informed
- You begin taking ownership of key project components with minimal oversight
- 1–3 years of construction experience (civil/site work preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings and specifications
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and construction software (Procore, Bluebeam, etc.)
- Self-starter with a strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Must currently reside in the Raleigh–Durham (Triangle) area
- Direct path to Project Manager
