Responsible for participating in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Lead Water Treatment Plant Mechanic.”
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industries; plumbing and electrical codes; and the City Policy Manual. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the repair and maintenance of plant equipment. Strict regulations, rapid changes in technology, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain Water Treatment Plant equipment. Success in this position results in the provision of a safe water supply in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the general public, and vendors.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, a Water treatment plant, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Job Summary

- Monitors treatment plant equipment and troubleshoots potential problems; performs corrective maintenance in a timely manner.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs preventative maintenance at water plants and related facilities, including sludge processing facility, water tanks, and pump stations.
- Processes sludge; operates a trac-vac system; drains and cleans basins.
- Installs new equipment, such as pumps, motors, and chemical feeding systems.
- Fabricates and repairs parts.
- Assists in the maintenance of parts and supply inventory; orders part's and supplies as needed.
- Maintains records of preventative maintenance schedules.
- Assists in the repair of electrical systems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment procedures and technology, chemistry, equipment, and process control.
- Knowledge of the repair and maintenance water treatment equipment and related components.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding safety training and safe work practices.
