General Description:
The purpose of this job within the organization is to conduct fire safety inspections of buildings, rectify and reveal fire hazards. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in fire safety or related field. Requires one year experience with fire inspection or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
SC State Fire Marshal Certification and/or ICC Fire Inspector Certification
Fire and Life Safety Educator Certificate
Fire/Arson Investigation Certificates
CPR and First Responder Training
Valid Driver’s License

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of the geographical layout of the City, including streets and principle buildings.
- Some knowledge of hazardous materials.
- Ability to learn modern principles and techniques of fire prevention and firefighting.
- Ability to learn codes and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention and fire safety.
- Ability to learn modern fire safety inspection techniques.
- Ability to identify and define hazards and recommend effective remedial action; ability to conduct harmonious discussions with property owners to persuade them of desired action; ability to enforce codes and ordinances firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; ability to follow written and oral instructions quickly and correctly; demonstrates effective computer skills.
- Ability to communicate with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Inspects local commercial businesses, multi-family residential properties, industrial installations, and buildings of public assembly for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection systems and equipment, adequacy of fire escapes and exits, and general compliance with fire prevention codes and ordinances
- Identifies and defines hazards and makes recommendations to property owners for reducing or eliminating such hazards; prepares written notices for follow-up action; makes daily entries of data into Fire Department’s computer system.
- Participates in fire safety education programs in the public schools; teaches fire safety classes as necessary; attends in-service training classes as required.
- Answers inquiries regarding fire prevention related matters; resolves problems and complaints of citizens; refers unusual or difficult problems to supervisors for advice and assistance.
- Coordinates customer service events such as, installing smoke detectors; demonstrating Fire Safety House etc. issues burning permits and certificates of occupancy.
- Assists in fire safety education activities during National Fire Prevention Week.
- Assist primary fire investigators on fire scenes, as directed.
- Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
