Overview
Perform routine and skilled heavy physical work in construction and maintenance in the following areas: the sewer/drains system, streets, and snow removal.

Level I is the entry level in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees at this level initially work under supervision and perform a limited range of duties related to public works. Incumbents learn the full range of maintenance tasks in their assigned area, i.e., water and sewer system/streets/parks & building, working with greater independence on a broader range of duties as experience is gained.

Duties

  • Street Maintenance Worker I

· Break and remove surfaces; dig, shovel, haul, load and unload soils, sand, asphalt mixes and other materials; operate jack hammers, pavement breakers, concrete saws, spaders, tampers and other hand and power tools; shovel, rake, roll asphalt, spray oil; sand seal surfaces; prepare for overlays; cleanup work sites upon completion of jobs.

· Clean debris and dry cracks in preparation of application of rubberized crack sealant; level sealant with squeegee; operate equipment including air compressor, hot air lance and double boiler material melter.

· Sweep and remove refuse from corners, gutters, parking lots, and other assigned areas; use a variety of hand tools such as rakes, shovels, pitchforks, and related equipment; operate heavy and light trucks and power take-off equipment; remove refuse to dump sites; pick up papers and debris; perform incidental pruning to clear public areas.

· Remove snow from public areas using hand and power equipment including sanders, snowplows and snow shovels.

· Perform proper traffic control in work zones for employee and citizen safety including appropriate flagging techniques and device layout including signage, barricades, and cones.

· Operate assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; observe safe driving practices; observe safe work methods and safety practices; use appropriate safety equipment.

· Inspect, fuel, wash and clean vehicles and equipment; report the need for major repairs and service; perform minor equipment maintenance.

· Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Maintain basic records of daily work performed.

· Construct forms, pour and finish concrete; repair sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ramps and similar structures; construct concrete pads, walkways, walls and other structures for City departments.

· May instruct and direct the work of others on a project basis.

· Respond to emergency situations and non-emergency events in off hours as required.

· Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties which may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and minimum one year experience as a laborer in construction, in landscape maintenance or in maintenance work.

Licenses and Certificates:

· Possession of Nevada Driver’s License. State of Nevada CDL is desirable.

· Department of Transportation Flagging Certification is desirable.

· Possession of a Nevada Pesticide Applicator's license is desirable.

Knowledge of:

· Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of: sanitary sewers, storm drains and related facilities, planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning, or repair and construction of streets;

· Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work;

· Shop mathematics;

· Basic principles of customer service;

· Traffic control principles, practices and guidelines;

· Basic principles of work teams;

· Basic painting, plumbing and carpentry methods, tools and techniques;

· Basic concrete construction and finishing techniques;

· Basic principles of operating closed circuit televising equipment;

· Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning;

· Maintain lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees;

· Methods and equipment used in weed, pest and insect control and treating plant diseases;

· Installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation and pump systems.

Ability to:

· Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment used in the work including line locating and oxygen testing equipment;

· Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision;

· Properly place cones, signs and barricades and direct traffic flow at job sites;

· Utilize computer applications relate to work;

· Safely perform heavy physical labor;

· Prepare basic records and reports;

· Read and interpret plans, specifications and maps;

· Understand and follow oral and written instructions;

· Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Requires ability to perform assigned duties and sufficient strength and stamina to perform sustained physical labor, lift and carry equipment weighing up to 90 lbs. and to work outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to heavy traffic and other potential hazards; ability to work underground and elevated or confined spaces with possible exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances, exposure to effluent water and to wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Strength, stamina, and dexterity to sit in vehicles operating on rough roads and rough surfaces for various periods of time each day; walk on uneven or slippery surfaces; perform heavy manual tasks using hand tools such as shovels and picks; perform repetitive motions including use of controls with hands and feet; climb up and down ladders to enter confined spaces and other areas; coordination and dexterity to adjust and make minor repairs to equipment; visual acuity sufficient to operate equipment and read gauges in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions; depth perception sufficient to maneuver equipment and determine position of equipment components; ability to hear changes in operation of motors and other equipment; physically demanding work for continuous and lengthy periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most work is performed outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat, rain, snow, cold and wind. Frequent exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and odors. Potential exposure to dangerous chemicals. Occasional work in confined areas. Work may be performed independently and may be in isolated geographic areas.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Capable of passing a background investigation. Capable of passing a pre-employment drug screen. Must be willing to be called back, held over or work assigned shifts in emergency situations.
