The ideal candidate for this position will lead, coordinate, and work alongside entry-level maintenance staff to perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks on City facilities and infrastructure, including streets, signage, trash receptacles, and other public works assets. This role also supports snow and ice removal operations and involves operating various public works maintenance tools and equipment.
We currently have one vacancy in the Maintenance & Operations Department, for which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.
- Lead, plan, train, review, and participate in the work of lower level maintenance staff responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures such as streets, signs, sewers and storm drains, fountains, planters, trash cans, and related public works structures.
- Train assigned employees in their areas of work including maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Supervise the use, care and operation of appropriate hand and power tools and equipment including saws, hammers, shovels, light trucks, and related equipment.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
- Operate a variety of equipment and hand and power tools in the performance of assigned functions; haul and dump debris, cut trees, branches and shrubs, and pick up litter.
- Perform a variety of maintenance duties in the overlay of street surfaces; rake and spread asphalt; seal cracks and patch streets; perform pot hole patching and surface repairs using jack hammers and other equipment to fill and compact repaired areas.
- Perform street cuts for excavation and replacement of new asphalt; remove and replace concrete and asphalt; construct forms, lay cement and finish cement on curbs, gutters and sidewalks; perform cement repairs and patch work.
- Operate snow plows, sanders, and related snow removal equipment as required in the removal of snow and ice.
- Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
- Fabricate, prepare, paint, or silk screen street markings and signs; engrave plastic signs; replace and repair street signs as necessary.
- Perform a variety of tasks in the painting of traffic markings and signs; operate street striping equipment; paint crosswalks, stop bars, stop signs, directional arrows, lane markers, parking spaces, meter posts, barricades and traffic islands.
- Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
- Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies; obtain price quotes and purchase tools, parts, and supplies.
- Estimate time and materials needed for jobs assigned; requisition tools and supplies as required.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints or refer to higher level staff.
- Perform related duties as required.
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers and storm drains, or related public works facilities and structures including two (2) years at a level comparable to a Maintenance Worker I.
License or Certificate:
- Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, flagger certification.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of an in-person Written Examination, along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 30%
Written Examination = 70%
- Testing schedules are based on the number of applicants, and candidates will be notified via email after the recruitment closes and the schedule is finalized.

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.

Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:
The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.
Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
Probationary Period:
Certification of Eligibles, Appointments, and Probation (Rule VII, Section 12)
Classified employees who are newly hired, promoted, reclassified, transferred, or who voluntarily demote to a lower position are subject to a probation period.
The only exception is if an employee chooses to voluntarily demote back to the exact job they previously held within 24 months of being promoted.
