JOB SUMMARY

This position is a working supervisor in charge of the operation and minor maintenance of a large capacity wastewater treatment plant and five combined sewer retention basins. This position oversees, participates, and gives direction in the proper procedures and methods to a small crew of wastewater treatment plant operators engaged in all phases of plant and retention basin operations. This position requires working rotating shifts covering weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position also requires working a relief shift.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepares reports as requested by Operation Manager and Superintendent.
• Maintains operational database inputting and verifying process data.
• Prepares work requests for equipment in need of repair.
• Operate wastewater processes in an efficient manner by monitoring operation and making adjustments.
• Monitor and regulate flow of the combined sewer system to and from retention basins.
• Compliance of facilities with all NPDES permit limitations.
• Oversees, participates, or assists in the following:
• Minor equipment repairs such as preventative maintenance to process equipment. Assists in wastewater equipment repair.
• Diagnosis and repair of minor electrical problems.
• Places process equipment in service as needed.
• Observes, monitors, and records readings from equipment for efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant and retention & treatment basins.
• Rotation of process equipment as scheduled.
• Collects samples throughout the treatment plant collections system for the purpose of performing laboratory analysis such as: PH, BOD, and bacteriological tests according to prescribed procedures. Records results accurately and appropriately.
• Operation of all wastewater equipment including wastewater, sludge, and chemical feed pumps, presses, and process monitoring equipment.
• Maintenance of building and grounds including: cleaning, painting, mowing, and minor landscaping. Performs snow removal and salt spreading activities as needed.
• Maintains employee work schedule and vacation leave usage to assure necessary personnel requirements for plant operation.
• Monitors process chemicals and orders from suppliers as required.
• Schedules and fills vacancies for unscheduled absences of operators.
• Performs other related work as required.

ABILITIES

• Must be able to wear respirators and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, work in confined spaces and at various heights and depths to perform inspections and maintenance.
• Ability to perform routine/basic wastewater laboratory analysis.
• Ability to oversee the work of others.
• Ability to act quickly and competently in making necessary wastewater operation adjustments.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare reports on operating conditions.
• Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.
• Ability to work effectively under stress and changes in work priorities.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Must have two years' experience in wastewater treatment plant operations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Level "D" certification at time of appointment.

• • Must have the ability to obtain a Level "C" certification within three (3) years of job award.

• Previous supervisory experience highly desirable.
• Knowledge of the operational maintenance requirements of a wastewater plant.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods used in wastewater treatment operations.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
• Previous and demonstrated experience in the use of computer programs to include Microsoft applications.
• Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
