What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dockmaster position at The Charleston Place?
The primary role of the Dock Master at The Charleston Place, is to keep the loading dock clean, clear and functioning to meet the needs of the hotel. Also, to receive shipments for purchasing as needed and assist with group load in/out. Duties/Responsibilities
- Keep the loading dock clean, clear, painted and manage odor and pest. Including power washing
- Keep all equipment clean and operational
- Adhere to safety, security, and emergency procedures, react appropriately during emergency situations, and act promptly to correct hazards. Adhere to security procedures concerning the handling of guest room and master keys, security of boiler and electrical rooms and other engineering areas, proper storage of all chemicals, etc..
- Keep up with company vans/trucks (registration, insurance, fuel, maintenance needs by way of delivering and picking up from the mechanic, air in tires, check fluids), sign out and keep track of where vehicles are
- Facilitate trash removal services including the compactor and cardboard bails
- Act as an authoritative representative of the hotel to manage deliveries, delivery vehicles, contractors and their vehicles, the schedule for using each delivery bay and the loading zone on Hasel St.
- Keeping the freight elevator clean and clear for use, reporting any breakdowns
- Keeping the transfer switch room clean and clear. Keeping the cage locked at all times.
- Making runs to the offsite warehouse as needed and time allows
- Keeps Chief Engineer or Assistant Director of Engineering promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance so that prompt corrective action can be taken.
- Know how to operate hand and power tools
- Operate a pallet jack and portable manual forklift
- Operate power washer
- Have basic painting skills
- Basic vehicle maintenance (air tires, check fluids)
- Operate work order program to include detailed notes and status of tickets
- Communicate effectively with other departments such as housekeeping and stewarding to work towards a common goal
- Handle confrontational situations with a calm and authoritative manner
- Be flexible in scheduling
- Be teachable, have drive to better oneself
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years maintenance experience

- Must be able to lift equipment, supplies, etc. of at least 75 pounds.
- Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.
- The role may require extended periods of time on your feet, especially during peak hotel hours or events.
- Clear vision is important for reading labels, instructions, blueprints, reports, analyzing data, and guest interactions.
- Good hearing is necessary for effective communication with team via radios, with colleagues, guests, and stakeholders.
- Frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
- Regularly required to climb ladders, stand, walk, talk and hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms.
