Overview
Perform venipuncture blood collection and micro techniques in accordance with approved regulations and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Draw blood and label specimen tubes with date, time and initials.
- Complete required paperwork of the specimen tubes for proper shipment or analysis.
- Take inventory and request supplies as needed. Ensure proper equipment is available prior to drawing blood specimen (needle, holder, gauze, wipe pad, etc.).
- Clean the laboratory after each draw.
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, aiding technologists and collecting data, as necessary.
- Prepare reports as required to comply with state and hospital guidelines.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
- Training may be on the job or from formal education program.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- There are two skill levels for the venipuncture technician:
- Skilled in blood-taking techniques for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Skilled in techniques directed towards adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations.
- Good blood collection techniques are essential.
- Proficient in lab computer system.
- Good communication skills
- Able to draw blood in a timely manner.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to keep patients calm.
- Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Phlebotomy Certification required.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
- Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
