What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Instructor - Barre & Mat Pilates position at The Barre?
About the Business
The Barre on Stuyvesant is a new boutique Barre Mat Pilates studio opening in Lyndhurst, NJ. We’re a small, family-run local business something new from the ground up — not a franchise, not a big-box gym. We’re looking for our first Lead Trainer to help shape the studio before we even open our doors.
Job Summary

You’ll be one of the first hires on the team, working directly with ownership to get the studio schedule, class formats, and culture right — and helping us find the rest of the instructor team as we grow.
In this role, you will lead engaging group classes, inspire clients to achieve their fitness goals, and foster a motivating environment that promotes health, strength, and well-being. Your expertise will help elevate our program offerings, ensuring participants receive safe, effective, and enjoyable exercise experiences. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence lives positively while demonstrating your leadership and instructional skills within a supportive team.

- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and health & safety protocols such as CPR and AED operation
- Collaborate with team members to develop new programs that enhance member engagement and retention
Skills
- Extensive experience in group fitness instruction, with specific expertise in Pilates, Yoga, Body Mechanics, and Dance-based fitness modalities
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and sports coaching principles
- Proven ability to demonstrate exercises accurately while providing clear instructions for practice and modification
- Excellent client communication skills with a focus on fitness customer service and motivational coaching
- Ability to design effective exercise routines tailored to diverse client needs and fitness levels
- Certification in Barre and Mat Pilates instruction is required; additional certifications in Yoga, CrossFit, or cycling are advantageous
- Familiarity with gym equipment use, heavy lifting techniques, manual handling procedures, and health club operations
- Prior experience in the fitness industry or health club environment is preferred
