Responsibilities:
- In partnership with the department chair and colleagues, develop and teach computer science and engineering curriculum and lessons to ensure a cohesive learning trajectory from year to year;
- Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of makerspace equipment and tools, ensuring a safe and accessible environment for all students;
- Assist colleagues in integrating technology and hands-on learning into the broader curriculum;
- Seek opportunities to enhance experiential learning initiatives throughout the Middle School;
- Create an inclusive and supportive classroom community, establish routines and build relationships with students; use positive guidance, offer helpful feedback and exhibit patience, empathy and respect;
- Assess student progress and adjust teaching plans accordingly; provide students with regular and timely feedback about their progress;
- Maintain an ongoing dialogue with parents about student progress, through emails, phone calls, report-writing and in-person conferences; maintain strong communication with colleagues, families, and administration;
- Create and regularly update a digital classroom page, using Baldwin’s learning management system (LMS), as a primary means of communicating classroom activities to families;
- Collaborate with colleagues in other content areas to design interdisciplinary and project-based learning experiences;
- Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and a commitment to growth for yourself and your students, by actively pursuing professional development in the teaching of relevant to your teaching practice;
- Serve as Middle & Upper School Robotics Club Advisor, in partnership with the Shipley School; and
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of the Middle School or Head of School.
Qualifications:
- B.A. or M.A. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant subject area;
- 2-5 years of teaching experience in the discipline, ideally at the Middle School level;
- Proven experience in makerspace environments and familiarity with 3D design tools (e.g., SketchUp, AutoCAD, TinkerCAD);
- Understanding of design thinking and/or project-based learning methodologies;
- Experience in robotics;
- Creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching;
- Ability to use academic technology to enhance classroom instruction; and
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to provide developmentally appropriate feedback to middle school students.
