Position Summary: LB Plastics is a business unit of James Hardie Building Products. We are seeking a Tooling Design Engineer to provide support at our Mooresville, NC facility. The Tooling Design Engineer will report directly to the Tool Design Manager.

Position Summary: LB Plastics is a business unit of James Hardie Building Products. We are seeking a Tooling Design Engineer to provide support at our Mooresville, NC facility. The Tooling Design Engineer will report directly to the Tool Design Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling Design & Development
- Design detailed 2D and 3D extrusion tooling using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent).
- Develop engineering drawings and blueprints in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T standards for Toolroom and Production use.
- Apply Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools to validate, refine, and optimize die designs.
- Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) for tool builds and coordinate material procurement.
- Update and revise CAD models based on Tooling Technician feedback, production performance data, and modification requests.
- Develop models from legacy drawings, sketches, prototypes, or customer specifications.
- Support the launch of new tooling by creating and maintaining all required Tooling Introduction documentation.
- Partner with Tooling Technicians, Production teams, and Engineering leadership to analyze tooling-related issues and recommend practical corrective actions.
- Use precision measurement tools (CMM, micrometers, calipers, gauges, comparators) to verify tooling accuracy and ensure designs meet specifications.
- Provide engineering input to assist with Toolroom scheduling, workflow planning, and prioritization.
- Support troubleshooting activities related to extrusion performance, dimensional issues, or quality concerns.
- Maintain detailed design files, revision histories, engineering documentation, and tooling specifications.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve tooling quality, manufacturability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Participate actively in engineering and production meetings, offering recommendations for design optimization and process enhancements.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures when working around heavy tooling, machinery, and equipment.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment consistent with company, OSHA, and industry safety standards.
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting & Design Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
- Experience with CAD platforms (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
- Proficiency in CFD simulation software.
- Familiarity with extrusion processes, tooling construction, and manufacturing methods.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and ERP systems.
- Knowledge of drafting techniques, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering terminology.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for training, tooling support, or customer visits.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
