What are the responsibilities and job description for the Curator position at The American Legion?
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Archives and Museum Services Supervisor, tasked with the day-to-day organization and maintenance of the museum. Provides administrative support to the National Historian. Handles correspondence to include responses to reference requests related to Legion history and artifacts. Backs up other personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for acquisition, processing, repacking, cataloging, transportation, storage, display, and preventive conservation of existing and new museum collections.
- Serves as primary tour guide for walk-in requests for building and museum tours. Coordinates with other divisions for scheduled tours.
- Performs searches in a variety of materials and formats to answer routine requests for information and produces necessary correspondence with a high degree of accuracy.
- Research and develop physical and virtual exhibits.
- Conducts research on prominent members to complete notifications of their transfer to Post Everlasting.
- Helps the National Historian to carry out their duties as a National Officer to include administrative functions of the National Historian’s history contest and showcase.
- Provides support for the National Association of Department Historians of The American Legion (NADHAL), to include providing Department and Post Historians with materials, and attending NADHAL meetings, if necessary.
- Maintains and updates the division information rack with up-to-date information.
9. Assists with preparation and evaluation of material for filming and/or digitization.
10. When requested, digitize materials in variety of formats saving created files in a safe and prudent manner.
11. Cross-trained to serve as a back-up for other division staff.
12. Other duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP (reports directly to): Archives and Museum Services Supervisor
Education/Technical Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, Public History, or similar field required. Master’s degree preferred
Additional Skills Needed:
- Computer skills needed include MS Office to include Outlook, Word, and Excel; virtual exhibit systems and databases.
- Knowledge of basic museum processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of military history.
- Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
Experience:
3 to 5 years
Salary : $42,000 - $55,000
