Riley Home and Museum Curator
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., M-F {Some Saturday work during season
March – October and some evening work during events.}

Main Focus: Under general direction of the Parks Director, plans, organizes and manages the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum and ‘Lizabuth Ann’s Kitchen facility, oversight of collections (artifacts) in coordination with the Riley Old Home Society (ROHS), supervises staff directly and through subordinates; and performs related duties as required.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
· Provide a secure environment for all collection objects and follows best practices of the industry for the care, display, and preservation of artifacts.
· Maintains a complete and accurate inventory of City owned collections,
· Responsible for the management and care of the collections. As well as developing a written care program.
· Create and maintain collections record keeping and the ability to access/cataloging/inventorying/monitoring of any and all additions to the collections.
· Act as liaison to local businesses, sponsored and associated groups, School Districts, Libraries and City and County officials
· Engage with local businesses to host and entertain employees and clients on our grounds
· Purchase required supplies as needed working with the Parks Administrative Assist.
· Responsible for researching the collection, and works closely with Hostesses on creation of narratives for new exhibits and displays.
· Responsible for creating and carrying an exhibit plan.
· Responsible for creating Marketing and Community Relations engagements to promote the museum, the Kitchen and any and all events held within the Complex. Including such engagement with, but not limited to local, county and regional schools outreach for tours, create outreach materials i.e. flyers, lesson plans etc., collaborate with the greater museum community for mutual engagement opportunities i.e. guest speakers, sharing of collections, network.
· Responsible for continued fundraising, and filing grant applications to financially support projects and collections.
· Cataloging all incoming artifacts according to procedures and policies, verify existing artifacts are loaned according to procedures and policies.
· Responsible for Fostering and promoting the Riley Arts Trail.
· Develop and carrying out a plan which focuses on making the Riley Boyhood Home and Museum a more attractive place to visit as a tourist, and for those looking to live permanently by creating a vibrant active cultural destination.
· Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training new staff.
· Responsible for the daily direction and supervision of the Hostesses.

· Fostering education and learning for all ages by preserving and perpetuating the memory of James Whitcomb Riley for future generations on a more full time basis and not just in our Season to include but not being limited to the following activities:
· Preservation of priceless artifacts
· Educate future generations about Riley
· Offer Public Speaking to outside organizations, groups and clubs
SECONDARY JOB DUTIES:
· Responsible for the maintenance and revision of the museum’s collection policies within the framework of professional museum standards.
· Responsible for scheduling ‘Lizabuth Ann’s Kitchen events, meetings, workshops both internal and external
· Create, develop, maintain programs, events and activities
· Recruit, train and oversee volunteers
· Foster relationships with other Museums for joint events, temporary exhibits and sharing of artifacts in conjunction with ROHS
· Grow our community involvement with other local organizations to bring people to the Complex
· Work closely with the Riley Festival Board to ensure the Riley Home and Museum continues to play a significant role in the Festival
· Must be available to assist with special events and programs throughout the year. This can include, but is not limited to summer concerts, movies, Trunk or Treat, Turkey Day 5K, winter activities, etc.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
· Bachelor’s degree preferred in Museum Studies, Public History or History, or a discipline related to museum work.
· Minimum of 5 years’ experience preferred in curatorial work, material culture, and conducting research.
· Must have 3 to 5 yrs. of exhibit design, artifact handling, and creation of narratives.
· Must have valid Driver’s license with a proved
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS;
· The individual shall maintain frequent contact with co-workers, other City departments, other recreation organizations, program participants, local and regional school corporations, national associations, and the public for purpose of exchanging information, explaining/interpreting policies and procedures, coordinating program activities, and supervising and directing personnel.
· The individual will report directly to the Park’s Director
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· The individual must be able to perform their duties in a standard museum environment, interacting with the public, and outdoors involving sitting and walking at will, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, close vision, keyboarding, and hearing sounds/communication.
