EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Reports to: Project Manager
Status: Intermittent, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Location: Adak, AK
JOB SUMMARY: The Equipment Operator, under general supervision, is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment, as well as light to heavy duty trucks. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties supporting remediation and construction activities, including operating equipment such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, and dump trucks.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Champion Aleut values: accountability, transparency and rigor.
- Operate excavators, skid steers, loaders, and other heavy equipment safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established safety protocols.
- Operate additional heavy equipment on a training or developmental basis, including graders and track loaders.
- Perform required manual labor in support of overall project and jobsite needs.
- Inspect, service, and maintain assigned equipment; perform routine maintenance and minor emergency repairs.
- Identify and report complex mechanical issues requiring shop or specialized repairs.
- Assist with loading and unloading trucks, pipe installation, and other construction activities as needed.
- Safely use air tools, jackhammers, and additional hand and power tools related to job duties.
- Train and mentor less experienced employees on proper equipment operation, care, and safety practices.
- Lead and coordinate technical field activities, including preparation of work plans, logs, and client specific documentation.
- Plan, oversee, and execute environmental remediation and monitoring activities in field settings.
- Manage field logistics, including mobilization and demobilization of personnel, equipment, and subcontractors.
- Coordinate the preparation, review, and timely delivery of technical reports and project documentation in accordance with quality standards and project schedules.
- Support project management efforts by ensuring field activities comply with corporate, contractual, and regulatory health and safety requirements.
- Prepare routine project progress documentation, including weekly and monthly status reports.
- Serve as a point of contact for clients during field operations, maintaining clear communication and addressing site specific needs or concerns.
- Collaborate with project managers, technical staff, subcontractors, and clients to ensure field work aligns with project objectives and contractual requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong knowledge of equipment operations, construction, maintenance, and workplace safety procedures.
- Proficiency in operating heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, and trucks.
- Ability to interpret plans, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Skilled in equipment mobilization to remote locations.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with teams and stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound judgment.
- Ability to exercise discretion, tact, and initiative in decision-making.
- Willingness to travel locally and within Aleut Region for work-related purposes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years’ experience as an Equipment Operator.
- Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
- 8-hour HAZWOPER training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to work regularly in outside weather conditions.
