What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lapidary Artist / Stone Polisher position at The Agate Shop?
About the Role
We’re looking for a skilled and detail-oriented lapidary artist to polish stones into beautiful finished pieces. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys hands-on craftsmanship, has a strong eye for detail, and takes pride in transforming raw materials into something exceptional.
What You’ll Do
- Cut, grind, and polish a variety of stones, mainly agates
- Shape cabochons, slabs, and other custom forms
- Inspect stones for cut marks, quality, fractures
- Maintain and operate lapidary equipment safely and efficiently
- Deliver consistent, high-quality finishes
- Collaborate on custom designs or unique pieces when needed
- Follow safety protocols diligently when working with heavy equipment, welding tools, or other potentially hazardous materials
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring all tools and materials are properly handled and stored
- Cleaning the equipment after use
- Keep stock of inventory needed
What We’re Looking For
- Experience with lapidary tools (saws, grinders, polishers)
- Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
- Patience and precision in hands-on work
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Passion for stones, minerals, and artistic creation
Bonus if you have:
- Jewelry-making or design experience
- Knowledge of different stone types and their properties
- Experience using a bull wheel, cabbing machine, reciprocating flat lap or similar.
