Position Description:

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of equipment and building mechanical systems, including boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, generators, pumps, air compressors, and associated controls. The Stationary Engineer ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of facility infrastructure while maintaining compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and operational standards. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air compressors, generators, and auxiliary equipment. 
  • Start up, shut down, regulate, and adjust mechanical systems to maintain required operating conditions. 
  • Monitor control systems, instrumentation, gauges, meters, and building automation systems (BAS). 
  • Perform routine inspections of mechanical equipment and utility systems. 
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and operational deficiencies. 
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on utility plant and facility equipment. 
  • Maintain boiler water treatment and chemical treatment programs as required. 
  • Monitor steam, chilled water, heating hot water, compressed air, and electrical distribution systems. 
  • Respond to equipment failures, utility outages, alarms, and emergency situations. 
  • Maintain operational logs, maintenance records, and regulatory documentation. 
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance activities with contractors and maintenance personnel. 
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and facility-specific safety requirements. 
  • Support energy conservation and sustainability initiatives. 
  • Participate in emergency response and contingency operations. 

 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • Technical school, vocational training, or associate degree in engineering technology, HVAC, utilities operations, or related field preferred. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating and maintaining central utility plant or commercial/industrial mechanical systems. 
  • Possession of a Stationary Engineer License, Boiler Operator License, or equivalent certification where required. 
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred. 
  • Thorough knowledge of boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, steam systems, and mechanical equipment. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Understanding of electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and control systems. 
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, piping diagrams, and technical manuals. 
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles and troubleshooting techniques. 
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system problems. 
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures associated with high-pressure systems and rotating equipment. 
  • Proficiency in maintaining operational records and reports. 
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills. 
  • Experience in O&M to include support of a work force that is responsible for O&M and repair of all facility systems, subsystems, and selected equipment typically found in a Base Operating Services contract.  
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.  
  • Must be able to pass a company drug screen and background check. Must possess a valid state driver’s license and insurable driving record.
