The Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered care throughout the perioperative process. This role has the ability to float to assigned departments (PAT/PO/PACU/SDRR/Med/Surg) of the hospital. When assigned, this role is responsible for preparing patients for surgery in the PAT/Pre-Op area, monitoring and managing patients recovering from anesthesia in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), caring for patients in the Same Day Recovery Room (SDRR), and taking patients on the Medical-Surgical Unit. The RN performs assessments, administers medications, monitors vital signs, and provides education and emotional support to patients and their families. The nurse works collaboratively with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other surgical team members to ensure safe and efficient patient care transitions across all phases of perioperative care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates professionalism at all times and adheres to the standards of practice by following professional guidelines for practice from the Texas Board of Nursing, American Nurses Association professional standards, CIHQ, and all Federal and State standards of care.
  2. PAT/Pre-Op: Performs the nursing process by conducting thorough patient assessments (example: history,  NPO status, allergies, vital signs, labs, and etc.) review and evaluation. Verify surgical consents and ensure proper documentation. Follows physician orders for IV therapy and medications. Ensure patient Identification.  Provides safe and direct patient care. Promotes patient care as primary focus by ensuring that individualized, goal-directed nursing care is provided to patients through the use of the nursing process.
  3. PACU: Monitor patients emerging from anesthesia for airway, respiratory, and hemodynamic stability. Assess for pain, nausea, bleeding, and surgical complications. Administer medications as ordered and when needed.
  4. SDRR: Continue post-op recovery monitoring for same day patients prior to discharge. Educate patients and families on post-operative care, medications, restrictions, and follow-up instructions. Assess readiness for discharge using established criteria. Ensure proper documentation of discharge instructions and patient understanding. Acts as physician-patient (family) liaison.  Acts as patient advocate by providing appropriate teaching to patient and/or significant other.
  5. Medical/Surgical Unit: Continue Medical and or Surgical Care. Provides high-quality, care to a diverse patient population, including those recovering from orthopedic, spine, ENT, ophthalmology, cosmetic, urology, oral maxillofacial and other surgeries as scheduled, as well as patients undergoing medical substance abuse detoxification.  
  6. Provides assessment of physiologic, mental and psychosocial health status of the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Uses critical thinking skills and knowledge to pro-actively intervene to ensure optimal patient care.
  7. Maintains professionalism and teamwork within a fast-paced environment. Contributes to positive interpersonal and inter-departmental communication demonstrated by positive interactions with patients, families, peers, and physicians.
  8. Participate in required continuing education and department meetings. Completes unit based skills/in-service and is responsible for personal completion by set or specific dates. When needed, participate in training of new staff. Delegates tasks appropriate to the skill level of personnel.  Participates in quality improvement initiatives, safety huddles, and incident reporting to support a culture of safety and enters RL6 incidents.
  9. Maintains a working knowledge and thorough understanding of all equipment and utilities and provides knowledgeable guidance and evaluation of the environment of care management including life safety (fire prevention), security, hazardous materials and waste management, emergency preparedness, infection control, and the safe use of medical equipment and utilities.
  10. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility to changes in the schedule and/or work assignments necessary to meet the changing needs of the individual patient or unit.
  11. Utilizes electronic medical records (EMR) systems to document care and communicate effectively with the healthcare. 
Qualifications:
  • Education & Training:
    • Associate's degree in nursing required.
    • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 1-3 years of acute care as a Registered Nurse required.
    • Prior experience in PACU, ICU, or critical care strongly preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration:
    • Current RN license in the state of Texas required
    • BLS required
    • ACLS required
    • PALS required
    • CPAN, CAPA, or CMSRN preferred
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as employees may occasionally be required to operate a company vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as required by law.
