The Medical Assistant is a critical member of the clinical team, responsible for both clinical and administrative duties. While patients are in the clinic, the MA interviews patients, documents directly in the EMR, schedules tests and procedures, assists with minor in-office procedures, and supports efficient patient flow.

This role also includes answering and triaging patient phone calls, managing referrals, and coordinating care with outside specialists. A clear understanding that medicine is a service industry and the patient is the customer is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and escort them from the waiting room to exam rooms

  • Collect detailed patient histories and document accurately in the EMR

    • Review prior chart entries and become familiar with established patients

  • Measure and record vital signs

  • Answer phones and manage patient inquiries

  • Manage and process referrals, including sending records to outside specialists

  • Obtain faxed medical records from referring physicians

  • Schedule tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments

  • Assist physicians with minor in-office procedures

  • Clean and sanitize exam rooms between patients

  • Keep exam rooms stocked and organized

  • Clean and sterilize medical equipment

  • Contact insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations

  • Manage prescription refill requests

  • Triage patient phone calls, review concerns with the physician, and respond appropriately

  • Help keep the clinic and physician on schedule

  • Maintain clean, organized nursing and patient care areas

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant preferred

  • Ability to take and document vital signs

  • Strong typing and computer skills

  • Familiarity with Windows-based systems

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

  • Experience with NextGen EMR preferred but not required

  • Professional phone etiquette and strong communication skills

  • Dependable, reliable, and consistently punctual

  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required)

  • Medical Assistant certification (recommended)
