TDAs consumer protection efforts promote success, unity and prosperity for the people of Texas.Job DescriptionWHAT YOULL DO: The Seed Analyst will perform routine work in the Seed Lab. This position will conduct indoor testing according to the Association of Official Seed Analyst Rules for Testing Seed to assure agricultural seed and vegetable are properly labeled and meet the labeling requirements of the Texas Seed Law. As a Seed Analyst, you will assist in receiving and preparing seed samples for purity and germination testing, compiling and tabulating test results, and maintaining the work area. This position will work under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job DutiesDivide and weigh samples for purity analysis (under the supervision of an experienced seed analyst) according to the Association of Official Seed Analyst (AOSA) Rules for Testing Seeds, International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) rules, TDA safety rules and laboratory policies and procedures; prepare and label a portion of the samples for varietal testing.Conduct purity tests on small grains, legumes and large seeded crops by separating and weighing components of pure seed, inert matter, other crop seed and weed seed under the supervision of an experienced seed analyst.Assist with planting samples by hand or vacuum planting system for germination testing.Classify seedlings according to the AOSA and/or ISTA rules of seedling evaluation as normal, abnormal, dead, dormant or hard; perform proper tests to determine the percentage of dormant seed under the supervision of an experienced seed analyst.Monitor germinator temperatures and light conditions on a daily basis to ensure proper testing.Assist with the receiving of official and service samples, enter data into the computer, print sample cards and assemble, as needed.Calculate percentages of pure seed, inert matter, other crop seed, weed seed, noxious weed seed and germination percentages on official and service samples received; apply and check tolerances.File samples in the storage area provided.Continually develop skills and knowledge of AOSA and ISTA testing rules and procedures.Follow all TDA policies and procedures.Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsTo be considered for the position, applicants must submit a State of Texas Application through CAPPS Careers or WIT experience listed on the application must state how each of the following qualifications are met:Highschool DiplomaTwo years work experience in agriculture, science, or related field.Substitution Clause: Technical Certificate in a scientific field such as agriculture, botany, agronomy, biology, horticulture, or related can substitute for one year of the required experience.Associates degree in a scientific field such as agriculture, botany, agronomy, biology, horticulture or related can substitute for required experience.One year of work experience related to the primary duties may substitute for one year of college.Valid Texas drivers license and an acceptable driving record. Preferred QualificationsBachelors degree in agriculture, botany, agronomy, biology, horticulture or a related field.Experience working in a seed laboratory and/or with seed analysis.Experience using laboratory equipment including, but not limited to balances, di iders, seed blowers, analytical ovens, seed germinators, vacuum counters and microscopes. Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of applicable local, state, and federal ordinances and laws; of lab analysis techniques and procedures; and of lab safety practices and techniques.Skill in providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers; in the operation and maintenance of laboratory and research equipment; in performing mathematical computations; and in the use of a computer and applicable software.Ability to conduct inspections, surveys, investigative research, and studies; to analyze lab samples; to prepare reports; to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; and to exercise sound judgment and discretion. Working ConditionsPhysical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work is conducted in a seed laboratory and involves pesticide-treated seeds where certain safety procedures must be able to be performed and safely lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds to eye level. May involve walking; sitting and standing for long periods of time using arm-shoulder motion; repetitive hand/wrist motions; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Involves occasionally working outdoors and in a greenhouse. Also involves exposure to pesticide-treated seed. May include travel (up to 5%), occasionally overnight.
