The Senior Communications Specialist I for Strategy and Business Services, under supervision, writes, edits, designs and assists in the production of informational and promotional materials, presentations and special events. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Strategy and Business Services, the Senior Communications Specialist I is a key contributor to advancing the division’s strategic priorities, blending strong executional skills with emerging strategic capabilities to support the development and delivery of clear, consistent and impactful messaging across multiple channels. This role drafts and coordinates communications, maintains web content and develops materials in collaboration with subject matter experts within the Strategy and Insights team and with communications colleagues across Strategy and Business Services.

Salary: Starting salary of $70,000 annually with further consideration based upon education and experience.

This role drafts and coordinates communications, maintains web content and develops materials in collaboration with subject matter experts within the Strategy and Insights team and with communications colleagues across Strategy and Business Services.
Essential Duties and Tasks:
Content Creation and Production
- Independently creates, edits, designs, and produces various communication materials such as talking points, FAQs, brochures, invitations, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, speeches, presentations and reports.
- Leads on drafting internal and external communications and ensures their effective distribution strategy. Note: this role is primarily focused on internal communications.
- Designs graphic communications pieces within brand guidelines, initiating and executing creative ideas.
- Develops and refines templates for digital communications including social media, emails, and websites, ensuring consistency and effectiveness.
- Manages and organizes digital asset libraries.
- Translates complex institutional initiatives into clear, accessible and engaging messaging for primarily internal audiences.
- Drives enhancements to the multimedia presence of the organization or department through innovative contributions.
- Independently supports project timelines and monitors cost tracking, taking charge of coordination efforts.
- Leads the development and refinement of departmental communications plans, providing strategic and creative direction.
- Oversees the planning and execution of projects, focusing on innovative implementation.
- Demonstrates effective task management within collaborative teams while taking initiative in creative contributions to email newsletters, articles, feature stories, and news releases.
- Independently publishes and updates content on organizational platforms and websites, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Independently manages the development and implementation of a comprehensive web strategy for Strategy and Business Services.
- Oversees photography, video, and graphic design for digital media content, ensuring alignment with brand standards.
- Implements independent creative strategies and trends in digital communications and analytics, monitoring and adjusting as necessary.
- Leads collaboration with teams to create cohesive print and digital support materials, ensuring they meet strategic objectives.
- Independently contributes to marketing plans through communication and promotional activities, leveraging innovative approaches.
- Oversees website content updates and leads web projects with a focus on creative execution and strategic impact.
- Ensures web content meets accessibility standards and monitors website health.
- Limited support for social media, largely in collaboration with central marketing and communications or other units (note: not currently used for the division)
- Leverages AI strategically and responsibly to enhance delivery of communications to target audiences.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, government relations, journalism or related field.
- Seven years of related experience in communications, marketing, public relations, government relations, journalism, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four years of experience within higher education or a complex organization.
- Internal communications experience and change management expertise.
- Experience supporting executive-level communications
- Familiarity with higher education environments and shared governance structures
- Basic design skills and proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience using various CMS platforms, including Cascade or Wordpress
- Strong written and oral communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage projects.
- Ability to work professionally and harmoniously in a service-oriented position.
