What To Expect
Tesla is seeking a dynamic and highly experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to lead our Infrastructure Electrical Design team in the Bay Area. As the Electrical Department Head, you will serve as the licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) of record, stamping plans and ensuring technical excellence across a diverse portfolio of projects—from $50K equipment installs to $100M facility buildouts. This full-time, onsite role places you at the intersection of cutting-edge innovation and rapid execution, supporting every major product vertical at Tesla, including Vehicle, Energy, Autopilot, AI, Robotics (Optimus), Semi, and Cell manufacturing.

You'll lead a team of electrical engineers, mentoring their professional growth while driving the standardization, quality, and velocity of electrical design across Tesla's Bay Area operations. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two weeks look the same, possess a first-principles approach to problem-solving, and are passionate about sustainable energy infrastructure, this role offers unparalleled opportunity to shape the future of Tesla's facilities.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the Electrical Department Head and licensed P.E. of record, reviewing and stamping electrical plans for permitting across all project types and scales
  • Lead the development of electrical designs spanning 12V to 35kV systems, including power distribution, grounding, lighting, and controls for manufacturing equipment, building infrastructure, battery/energy storage, EV charging, and R&D test setups
  • Prepare and oversee IFC (Issued for Construction) and IFP (Issued for Permit) drawing packages using Revit, ensuring compliance with NEC, California Building Code (CBC), and Title 24
  • Perform and direct critical electrical studies including arc flash hazard assessments, fault current analyses, voltage drop calculations, selective coordination, transient analyses, and harmonic studies using ETAP, SKM, or equivalent software
  • Drive innovative, first-principles electrical design solutions that balance technical excellence with constructability, cost-effectiveness, and Tesla's sustainability objectives
  • Establish and track team KPIs, prepare impact reports, and deliver executive-level status updates on electrical progress for critical programs
  • Prioritize and allocate team resources across a high volume of concurrent projects—ranging from rapid-turnaround equipment installs to multi-quarter facility buildouts—ensuring balanced workloads and on-time delivery
  • Partner with stakeholders across all Tesla product verticals to refine project scopes, validate feasibility, and optimize designs for sustainability, efficiency, and cost
  • Interface with external EPC firms, vendors, and contractors during bidding, procurement, and construction phases to enforce compliance and mitigate risks
  • Present design concepts, progress updates, and risk assessments during project milestone reviews to multi-discipline teams and leadership

  • What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience. Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of California (different state PE with ability to obtain CA PE via reciprocity within 60 days will be considered)
  • 10 years of hands-on experience designing electrical systems for heavy commercial, industrial, manufacturing, or R&D environments
  • Demonstrated experience across a broad voltage range (12V to 35kV), including low, medium, and high voltage power distribution systems
  • Expert proficiency in Revit MEP, including advanced modeling, BIM coordination, panel scheduling, and circuiting
  • Proficiency in electrical analysis software (ETAP, SKM, or equivalent) for fault current, arc flash, transient, harmonic, and coordination studies
  • In-depth knowledge of NEC, California Building Code (CBC), California Energy Code (Title 24), and NFPA standards
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, with a track record of developing talent and driving team performance
  • Strong ability to manage multiple concurrent projects across varying scales and timelines in a high-velocity environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with cross-functional teams, executives, and external partners
