Description
The Materials Management Technician is responsible for the procurement, receipt, storage, distribution, and inventory control of all supplies, instruments, and equipment required for the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role ensures that all clinical and non-clinical departments are adequately stocked and that all supplies meet quality and regulatory standards. The technician works closely with surgical teams to anticipate needs, maintain accurate records, and support cost-effective operations, under the direction of the materials manager.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
1. Supply Chain & Inventory Management
- Monitor inventory levels, rotate stock, and ensure appropriate par levels are maintained.
- Perform routine cycle counts and reconcile discrepancies.
- Receive, inspect, and verify all incoming shipments for accuracy and quality.
- Organize and maintain clean and orderly storage areas.
2. Procurement & Vendor Relations
- Assist in ordering supplies, instruments, and equipment as directed by the Materials Manager.
- Communicate with vendors regarding backorders, product recalls, or substitutions.
- Track purchase orders, packing slips, and invoices to ensure accuracy and proper documentation.
3. Sterile and Non-Sterile Supply Support
- Ensure all sterile supplies are stored according to infection control standards.
- Assist clinical staff in locating and delivering required items in a timely manner.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for lot numbers, expiration dates, and recalls.
4. Cost Control & Data Management
- Support cost containment by monitoring product usage and suggesting alternatives when appropriate.
- Accurately log inventory transactions in the ASC’s materials management system.
- Prepare inventory reports for leadership as required.
5. Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Adhere to OSHA, infection control, and ASC policies regarding storage and handling of medical supplies.
- Participate in safety inspections, equipment checks, and ensure compliance with accreditation standards
- Assist with product evaluations and new item requests.
6. Team Collaboration
- Provide excellent customer service to clinical and administrative staff.
- Assist with equipment set-up or troubleshooting of supply-related issues when needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience:
- Prior experience in materials management, central supply, or inventory control (preferably in a healthcare or surgical setting) required.
- Knowledge of orthopaedic surgical instruments, sterile supplies, and medical terminology preferred.
- Skills/Competencies:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and inventory software, ENVI preferred.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs and stand/walk for extended periods.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced, clinical environment with exposure to sterile processing areas, storage rooms, and loading docks.
- Must adhere to safety and infection control protocols at all times.
