SUMMARY: Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining refuse collection vehicles (garbage trucks) and related equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. This role involves both mechanical and electrical work on hydraulic systems, diesel engines, brakes, and other components used in heavy-duty vehicles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on front loaders, rear loaders, roll-off, and side-load garbage trucks and Concrete Mixers.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) services and safety inspections according to manufacturer and company standards.
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, and electronic controls.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed.
- Order and replace parts as needed while adhering to company purchasing procedures.
- Operate diagnostic tools and software to identify vehicle issues.
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other technicians regarding vehicle condition and repair status.
- Assist with road calls and emergency repairs as needed.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience in heavy-duty refuse truck maintenance, required.
- ASE certification(s) in Medium/Heavy Truck (T1–T8) or equivalent are a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and air brakes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work orders.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and repair tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move heavy vehicle parts or equipment (often up to 50–75 lbs)
- Work in various weather conditions and environments (indoor/outdoor).
- Stand, bend, kneel, or lie under vehicles for extended periods.
- Ability to use tools, diagnostic equipment, and small parts with precision.
- Frequent squatting, bending, and twisting.
- Working in confined spaces (engine bays, under vehicles).
- Climbing in and out of vehicles, sometimes repeatedly.
Licenses:
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class B or higher) preferred.
Work Environment:
- Field setting with occasional shop service work.
- Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and heavy equipment.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) provided and required at all times.
