What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Deaf Education Interpreter position at Temple ISD?

$1,500 Sign-on Bonus

SUMMARY:

Act as facilitator of communication between the students and the mainstream teachers by providing a complete auditory link for students when appropriate and possible.

The work requires flexibility to meet changing and unforeseen situations, sensitivity in balancing the need for information and privacy, working largely independently and reporting to the principal or RDSPD Coordinator if problems arise.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following:

1. Interpret all formal education settings where facilitation of communication is needed.

2. Interpret/Transliterate all voice all communication/discussion between students and teachers.

3. Render the message faithfully, conveying the content and spirit of the speaker.

4. Maintain confidentiality discussing only major difficulties with the educational team responsible for the student’s educational programs.

5. Remain impartial allowing students the freedom to make choices and to learn as independently as possible.

6. Encourage independence of the student in interaction with peer groups and teachers.

7. Obtain and familiarize self with materials being taught and prepare for each assignment.

8. Work with student, general education teacher, and deaf education teacher to coordinate

2. best placement of self and student for maximum accessibility.

9. Be familiar with and follow student’s IEP and transition goals to work with education team in providing services.

10. Follow the national, state, and district policies and standards for interpreters.

11. Follow RID and RDSPD recommendations for professional dress while actively interpreting

12. Attend all required campus, district, and RDSPD meetings.

13. Attend training to improve skills and maintain certification.

14. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the campus principal or RDSPD Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Graduate from an accredited interpreter training program or the like (preferred) Valid certification as interpreter granted by RID, BEI, and/or EIPA (Required)


EXPERIENCE:

Experience interpreting in an academic setting preferred


SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to interpret in an educational setting

Knowledge of Interpreter role, RID Professional Code of Conduct, and EIPA Guidelines Ability to communicate effectively and speak to groups

Knowledge of deafness and literacy issues regarding students with hearing impairment Ability to interpret/transliterate ARDs and assessments

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds or assist in a 2 man lift up to 200 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
