Temple Allen Industries (www.templeallen.com) is a small technology firm headquartered in Rockville, MD, just outside of Washington D.C., currently developing a line of smart automation products which promises to dramatically reshape the robotics, machine learning, and aerospace landscape. The firm has enjoyed particular success in serving a prestigious list of aerospace clients in both commercial and defense sectors.
We’re looking for a quick-learning individual to come in and join our team as a machinist responsible for the manufacturing and fabrication of parts and assemblies to be used primarily for rapid prototyping. We are happy to offer training, so minimal prior experience is required. We want machinists who are excited to be part of a team, eager to interact with Engineering, Business Development, and Procurement personnel, both to collaboratively share requirements and deadlines, and to share knowledge and information that both parties can use to better their decision-making. You should be eager to actively engage the team and supportively recommend changes and improvements to a design that allows for faster production while successfully delivering on key requirements for a given part or assembly.
You will be working with manual machines, power tools, and hand tools (not CNC machines). These include, but are not limited to: manual mills, manual lathes, drill presses, band saws, miter saws, hand drills, grinders, and the normal range of hand tools and layout tools. You will work primarily with 6061 aluminum with occasional work packages dealing with other aluminum alloys, as well as materials including wood, carbon steel, stainless steel, Delrin, and UHMW.
You should be excited to create great things, and you should be highly organized throughout laying out, machining, and finishing parts, putting together assemblies, and keeping the machining and assembly spaces clean. As an organized individual, you should naturally drive to take advantage of fixtures and templates to simplify and accelerate repeated machining steps. You should have a very high mechanical aptitude and an innate ability to understand how things are best machined and assembled.
Responsibilities include: The following items are expected tasks an individual accepting this position will be undertaking and completing:
- Work well with the team of engineers, other machinists, Business Development, and Procurement
- Read technical drawings, select proper materials, and perform layouts
- Produce first article component parts using a variety of machines such as manual lathe, manual mill, drill press, bandsaw, etc.
- Select the mill bits or drill bits of the proper size, type, and coatings, in conjunction with the proper feeds and speeds of the operation
- Perform necessary rework on incoming parts
- Support daily manufacturing operations in manufacturing facility.
- Manufacture, align, test, and troubleshoot subassemblies and final assemblies
- Provide production and progress reports to supervisors
- Maintain and clean production equipment and work areas
- Maintain an orderly, organized workflow and working area
- Participate in design and prototyping discussions with Engineering
- Participate in discussions with Procurement about ordering new tools and stock, and support Procurement when communicating with machine shops for outsourced parts
- Troubleshoot problems with equipment, materials, or inventory
- Other manufacturing tasks as required
- Maintain inventory of job materials
Key Qualifications include:
- High school diploma/GED
- Minimal previous machine shop experience
- High mechanical aptitude
- Ready to work with manual mills, lathes, drill presses, table saws, band saws, and other power tools
- Skilled with basic hand and layout tools (e.g., drill and taps, crimpers, pin extractors, calipers, etc.)
- Skilled with interpretation of CAD drawings, procedures, specifications, etc.
- Able to multi-task in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Able to work while standing for extended periods of time
- Strong work ethic
- Highly organized
- Capable of lifting 50 pounds unassisted
- Reliable mode of transportation

Compensation:
Commensurate with skills and experience. This is a salaried, performance-based position.
Pay: $22.00 - $27.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40 per week
