Job Description:
The Azure Data Architect plays a critical role in defining, governing, and evolving enterprise data architecture to enable scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions. This role provides technical leadership across cloud-native and legacy environments, supporting analytics, operational systems, and strategic initiatives.Working closely with business stakeholders, solution architects, and data engineering teams, the architect translates complex requirements into robust technical solutions, defines data integration frameworks, and ensures alignment with enterprise data strategy. Responsibilities:
- Lead data architecture delivery across projects and domains in collaboration with stakeholders
- Gather and translate business and technical requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models
- Design and maintain enterprise data models, database schemas, and data structures for transactional and analytical systems
- Ensure compliance with enterprise architecture standards, governance, and naming conventions
- Define and maintain data integration strategies, patterns, and roadmaps
- Provide technical leadership for ETL and data integration (Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Informatica)
- Develop source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, and business rules
- Partner with business teams to define KPIs, metrics, and data models for reporting and analytics
- Build and maintain curated datasets and semantic models for BI and reporting
- Perform data profiling, validation, and reconciliation using SQL and Python
- Define data validation rules and support QA/UAT processes
- Participate in data governance, metadata management, and lineage tracking initiatives
- Collaborate across application, infrastructure, and integration teams
- Lead architecture reviews, identify risks, and recommend mitigation strategies
- Mentor junior team members and promote best practices in data modeling and integration
- Contribute to project planning, estimation, and technical solution design
- Research and implement modern data architecture patterns and emerging technologies
Key Measures of Success:
- Delivery of conceptual, logical, and physical data models (Erwin preferred)
- High-quality technical design and architecture documentation
- Data flow diagrams and integration frameworks
- Scalable data pipelines and engineering solutions
- Accurate data mapping, transformation logic, and business rules
- Successful data migration and integration outcomes
Required Skills and Experience:
- Industry Experience: Property & Casualty (P&C) Insurance (preferred)
- Experience: 6–8 years in IT, with 5 years in data architecture/data engineering
Core Expertise:
- Data architecture, data modeling, and database design
- Microsoft Azure data services (ADF, Synapse, ADLS, Azure SQL)
- Advanced SQL and working knowledge of Python
- ETL and data integration (including Informatica or similar tools)
- Data governance, metadata management, lineage, and data quality
- Strong ability to translate business needs into scalable data solutions
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and business stakeholders
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, or Purview
- Familiarity with Delta Lake, Parquet, Spark/PySpark, and lakehouse architecture
- CI/CD experience with Azure DevOps
- Knowledge of event streaming, APIs, and data quality automation frameworks
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
Additional Requirements:
- Local candidates preferred (Worcester, MA or nearby)
- Hands-on development experience (SQL Python) required
