Ideal Core Technical Skills
- API Protocols & Architecture: Deep understanding of RESTful principles. Familiarity with GraphQL, gRPC, or SOAP (if maintaining legacy systems).
- API Documentation: Proficiency in using Swagger (OpenAPI) or Postman to document and test endpoints.
- Data Formats: Expertise in reading and mapping JSON and XML structures.
- Database & Querying: Strong SQL skills to validate data at the source (JOINs, subqueries, and data profiling).
- Authentication & Security: Knowledge of OAuth2, JWT, API Keys, and basic web security (HTTPS, TLS).
- Tools: Hands-on experience with Jira/Confluence for backlog management and Lucidchart/Visio for sequence diagrams and data flow mapping.
- Requirements Elicitation: Ability to translate vague business needs into precise Functional and Non-Functional requirements.
- API Product Management: Treating the API as a product—considering versioning, deprecation strategies, and developer experience (DX).
- Process Modeling: Creating "As-Is" and "To-Be" process maps using BPMN or UML.
- User Stories & Acceptance Criteria: Writing clear, technical user stories that a developer can pick up without further explanation.
- Gap Analysis: Identifying what the current system provides vs. what the new API needs to deliver.
