The OSP (Outside Plant) Aerial Lineman is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of aerial and underground fiber optic and copper cable networks. This role involves working at heights, performing hands-on construction and repair activities, and ensuring the reliability and quality of the telecommunications network through proper installation, testing, and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Aerial Installation and Construction
- Install aerial fiber optic and copper cable on utility poles following construction prints and specifications
- Lash fiber and copper cable to messenger strand using mechanical or manual lashing equipment
- Install and tension messenger strand, anchors, guys, and other strand hardware
- Perform pole transfers, mid-span placements, and overlash work
- Set, dress, and secure poles, crossarms, and aerial hardware as required
- Inspect aerial and underground plant for damage, clearance issues, and safety hazards
- Perform repairs on damaged or degraded fiber and copper cable to restore service
- Re-tension strand and cable and replace defective hardware as needed
- Respond to outages and emergency restoration work, including after-hours callouts
- Perform basic aerial fiber splicing and mid-sheath access as assigned
- Terminate fiber and copper cables at designated network connection points
- Conduct fiber testing using OTDR, power meter, and light source to verify signal integrity
- Identify faults, troubleshoot network issues, and document test results
- Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other construction equipment safely and efficiently
- Follow OSHA, NESC, DOT, and company safety requirements at all times
- Maintain proper use of personal protective equipment and job site safety standards
- Accurately read and interpret construction prints, maps, and work orders
- Working knowledge of aerial OSP construction for fiber and copper networks
- Hands-on experience lashing fiber and copper cable to strand
- Familiarity with fiber handling, splicing, and testing practices
- Comfortable working at heights from bucket trucks or aerial lifts
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship
- Ability to work as part of a crew under the direction of a lead or supervisor
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred
- Knowledge of NESC guidelines and OSP construction standards
- Experience using OTDR and other fiber testing equipment
- Knowledge of both aerial and underground telecommunications construction practices
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
- Ability to climb poles and work at heights using proper safety equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and perform overhead work for extended periods
