Tedford Housing is seeking a motivated, proven, operational manager to supervise the day-to-day operations of an overnight Warming Center located in Brunswick, Maine. Our ideal candidate should be able to juggle multiple priorities, be an effective communicator, and be a self-starter capable of working independently. Must have experience in staff supervision and familiarity and sensitivity to the challenges and issues faced by people experiencing unsheltered and unhoused living conditions.

The Warming Center Manager will be responsible for the overall safety and security of guests of the Warming Center and overseeing/coordinating the daily operations. The Warming Center will serve 20-30 individuals in need of shelter, including unsheltered and unhoused individuals in known encampments within MidCoast area. The Warming Center Manager will be supervised by Tedford Housing’s Director of Programs (or designee).

The typical schedule for this shift during the warming center season will be 5:00 pm – 1:00 am Monday through Friday. However, the candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including evenings, overnights, early mornings, and occasional weekend hours. Position includes weekday on call duties.

This is a seasonal, unbenefited position at 40 hours per week at a rate of pay of $28 per hour. Position will start on 10/1/26 and end on 5/5/27.

Hiring bonus of $1,000 to be paid upon successful completion of employment of the full Warming Center season with final paycheck.

Typical Duties of the Warming Shelter Manager will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Staffing

  • Ensure that the Warming Center is staffed by no fewer than two people at all times during operational hours (6:00 pm – 8:00 am).
  • Collaborate with Emergency Shelter Managers and Volunteer Coordinator to coordinate staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that staff have sufficient training to de-escalate conflicts and are able to respond to guests using empathy and trauma informed responses.
  • Ensure that staff understand basic safety protocols and when a situation may call for emergency responders/police.
  • Provide on-call duties during weekdays.

Administration

  • Collaborate with the Director of Administration on the collection and reporting of guest demographic information and warming center-related expenses required for monthly reporting.
  • Provide weekly, or more frequently as needed, updates to the Director of Programs and administrative team on the status of Warming Center operations.
  • Review and revise Warming Center policies and procedures with the assistance of the Program Director and the administrative team.
  • Complete interviews of prospective Warming Center Support Staff with the assistance of the Program Director.
  • Participate in monthly All Staff Meetings.
  • Participate in monthly trainings.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the Warming Center is kept clean and safe on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that staff understand and consistently practice basic safety protocols.
  • Coordinate meals including menu planning, shopping, and donations.
  • Ensure that the Warming Center has adequate supplies and monitor supply of inventory to restock as needed.
  • Conduct regular walk-throughs at the Warming Center to identify potential problems or need to adjust operational practices or protocols.
  • Ensure that staff are CPR and Narcan trained.
  • Coordinate the collection of sharps waste.

Resources and Navigation

  • In collaboration with the Director of Programs, establish and cultivate partnerships with local organizations who can provide services for guests of the warming center.
  • Ensure that Warming Center guests have current information for, and can be referred to, key community resources e.g. general assistance, mental health/crisis, recovery/substance use disorder resources, soup kitchen, immigrant resources, etc.
  • Ensure that all guests are referred to housing navigators at The Gathering Place or Tedford for housing navigation and stability services.

Warming Center Manager Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree and three years of relevant work experience in settings serving people experiencing homelessness or a residential setting is preferred. Or will consider a combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working with people with mental illness and substance abuse challenges.
  • Basic knowledge of homelessness and its causes.
  • Understanding of trauma informed care principles.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to track and execute multiple projects.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others in a supervisory capacity
  • Ability to advocate and engage with community partners
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and reliable transportation
  • Ability to adapt to change quickly

This position could lead to permanent, year-round employment with Tedford, to include continued Warming Center management and other seasonal projects.
