Microbiologist – Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a Microbiologist responsible for coordinating and performing testing for SARS-CoV-2 and other public health targets in wastewater and water samples. The role involves sample examination, analysis, result interpretation, reporting, quality control, compliance, and laboratory safety.

Responsibilities

• Conduct wastewater sample concentration, RNA extraction, and PCR molecular testing.
• Maintain laboratory records of submitted samples.
• Evaluate, interpret, and validate laboratory results.
• Perform quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials, and equipment.
• Assist with preparing reports from compiled laboratory data.
• Participate in evaluating new products used in environmental laboratory work.
• Maintain compliance with laboratory certification requirements.
• Follow laboratory safety practices and procedures.
• Participate in proficiency testing programs.
• Communicate technical information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Maintain productive working relationships with laboratory staff and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Biological Science.
• Experience performing RNA extraction and qPCR testing is required.
• Strong knowledge of molecular testing principles, theories, and practices.
• Knowledge of current molecular scientific methods and testing procedures.
• Ability to use molecular and standard laboratory equipment.
• Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles.
• Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies related to laboratory operations.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 year of molecular testing experience preferred.
