Senior Controls Design Engineer
Specializing in HVAC, Building Automation and Control Systems (BAS/BMS)

Position Summary
The Senior HVAC Controls Design Engineer leads the design phase of building automation and control system projects, developing highly functional, efficient, and cost-effective solutions that meet project plans, specifications, and performance requirements.
This role is responsible for translating mechanical system requirements into detailed control strategies, panel designs, wiring schematics, and network architectures. Senior engineers operate independently, oversee complex projects, and mentor junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities:Design and Engineering:
Review contract drawings, specifications, proposals, and budgets
Develop design schedules and manage engineering deliverables
Design DDC control panels, wiring schematics, and system interfaces
Create control strategies for HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Design BAS/BMS communication networks and system architecture
Develop electrical installation drawings and scopes of work
Select control system products and create project bills of materials
Document sequences of operations and system performance parameters
Project Coordination
Collaborate with project managers, field teams, and commissioning staff
Provide technical support during installation and startup
Ensure designs align with field conditions, constructability, and client expectations
Participate in client and contractor coordination meetings
Leadership
Lead design efforts for large and complex projects
Work independently with minimal supervision
Train, mentor, and oversee junior engineers
Establish design standards and best practices
Support continuous improvement of engineering processes
Qualifications:Experience:
Preferably 5 years of experience leading complex controls designs
Technical Knowledge
Strong understanding of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems
Experience designing DDC/BAS/BMS control systems
Ability to interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and communications drawings
Knowledge of system integration and building networks
Software Skills
AutoCAD
Bluebeam
Microsoft Office Suite

Strong organization and multitasking ability
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Education
