Job Description: Paraeducator

Position Title: Paraeducator
Reports To: Building Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)
Employment Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Paraeducator supports student learning under the direction of a licensed teacher. This position assists with instruction, classroom management, student supervision, and the implementation of individualized supports. The Paraeducator contributes to a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth for all students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in the delivery of instruction to individuals, small groups, or whole class settings.

  • Support implementation of lesson plans, accommodations, modifications, and targeted interventions.

  • Work directly with students to reinforce skills, clarify assignments, and encourage engagement.

  • Assist with data collection, documentation, and progress monitoring as directed.

  • Support classroom routines, transitions, and expectations.

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with district policy and law (FERPA, IDEA, etc.).

  • Assist with student supervision in hallways, lunchroom, recess, assemblies, and other school areas.

  • Monitor student behavior and provide de-escalation assistance using approved strategies.

  • Support students with personal care needs, mobility assistance, or health-related supports (where appropriate and trained).

  • Use positive, culturally responsive practices to build rapport and support learner success.

  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and administrators to meet student learning and behavioral goals.

  • Participate in required trainings and professional development.

  • Respect student dignity and maintain professionalism at all times.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by building leadership.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Meets state paraeducator certification/authorization requirements (or willingness to obtain)

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow district policies

Preferred

  • Associate’s degree or 60 college credits

  • Experience working with school-aged children

  • Training or experience in special education, behavioral intervention, or academic supports

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively

  • Patience, empathy, and flexibility

  • Ability to maintain professionalism in high-stress situations

  • Basic knowledge of instructional strategies, accommodations, and data collection

  • Ability to use educational technology and learning tools

  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and positive student outcomes

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move within classrooms, school buildings, and outdoor spaces

  • May require lifting, transferring, or assisting students (as appropriate)

  • Ability to sit, stand, or kneel for extended periods

  • School setting with frequent student interaction

  • Day-to-day tasks may vary based on classroom, teacher assignment, or student needs
