What are the responsibilities and job description for the Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic position at TDIndustries?
TDIndustries is seeking a highly skilled Journeyman Sheet Metal Technician to join our Construction Field team. This role is responsible for the installation, fabrication, assembly, testing, and repair of HVAC duct systems and equipment in alignment with project specifications, industry standards, and building codes.
The Journeyman plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, safe, and efficient mechanical systems while supporting apprentices and contributing to TDIndustries' culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties
- Install, assemble, and secure sheet metal ductwork, fittings, hangers, and HVAC components (e.g., air handlers, VAV boxes, fans, ventilators, grease ducts, and hoods).
- Measure, cut, fabricate, and join sheet metal components using hand tools, power tools, and welding/soldering equipment.
- Perform system layout and field coordination, identifying structural constraints and ensuring proper routing and support of duct systems.
- Conduct system testing (air/smoke testing) to verify performance and identify leaks or deficiencies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to TDIndustries' safety programs, PPE requirements, and 6S standards (Safety, Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, Sustain).
- Participate in Pre-Task Safety Planning (PTSP) and proactively address safety risks.
- Collaborate with project teams, including plumbers, welders, and pipefitters, to ensure coordination across trades.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to apprentices and less experienced team members.
- Report installation challenges, safety concerns, and quality issues to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project success.
- Interpret and execute work from blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, and specifications to ensure accurate and efficient installation of HVAC duct systems.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required; trade school or craft training preferred
- 4 years of experience in sheet metal / HVAC construction
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems, duct fabrication, and installation best practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents
- Familiarity with local building codes and industry standards
