What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Project Manager - Ornamental Metal position at Tate Ornamental, Inc?
Senior Project Manager – Ornamental Metal
Lead Complex Projects. Own the Outcome.
At Tate Ornamental, our Senior Project Managers don't simply track schedules and coordinate meetings. They take ownership of complex ornamental and architectural metal projects from contract award through final installation and closeout.
We're looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager who understands commercial construction, knows how to anticipate problems before they become expensive ones, and is comfortable being accountable for the financial and operational success of their projects.
You'll work across engineering, fabrication, procurement, finishing, installation, and construction teams to turn highly customized metal designs into successfully completed projects. You'll have significant autonomy in how you manage your work, along with clear expectations for budget, schedule, quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
If you're at your best when you're given a challenging project, the authority to lead it, and accountability for the result, this role is built for you.
The Problems You'll Solve
Our ornamental metal projects are highly customized, which means the solution isn't always obvious.
You'll regularly work through questions like:
- How do we maintain the architectural design intent while ensuring the work can be fabricated and installed efficiently and within budget?
- Where could engineering, material procurement, fabrication, finishing, or field conditions put the schedule at risk?
- What needs to happen now to prevent a problem several months from now?
- How do we recover when field dimensions, site conditions, or construction schedules change?
- Where is the project financially compared with where we expected it to be?
- Is a scope change ours, or does it require a change order?
- What information does Engineering, the Metal Shop, or Installation need from you to keep moving?
- How can we solve a customer's problem without compromising quality, schedule, safety, or project profitability?
We expect our Senior Project Managers to identify these issues early, make informed decisions, communicate clearly, and drive solutions forward.
What You'll Own
You will have responsibility for your projects from kickoff through closeout, including:
- Project budget, forecasting, billing, and Percentage of Completion (POC) reporting
- Contract and scope management
- Project schedules and milestones
- Engineering and shop drawing coordination
- Material planning, procurement, and long-lead tracking
- Metal fabrication and production coordination
- Finish and specialty material coordination
- Installation planning and subcontractor management
- Change-order identification and management
- General Contractor and customer communication
- Project documentation and ERP/TOP records
- Quality, safety, and field performance
- Final project closeout
Ownership here means more than reporting when something has gone wrong. We expect you to understand where your projects stand, anticipate where they're going, and take action when something needs attention.
What You'll Actually Do
You'll review contracts, estimates, drawings, specifications, and project documents before execution to understand scope, identify risk, and establish a plan for successful delivery.
You'll work closely with Engineering to keep shop drawings and detailing accurate and on schedule, while reviewing material requirements, fabrication needs, finishes, and procurement plans for potential cost or timing issues.
You'll develop and maintain project schedules and communicate meaningful updates to General Contractors and internal teams.
You'll lead coordination between Sales, Engineering, the Metal Shop, Installation, subcontractors, customers, and leadership so the people responsible for executing the work have the information and decisions they need.
You'll manage project financials, including budgets, forecasts, billing, POC reporting, cost impacts, and change orders.
You'll coordinate procurement and fabrication of materials and components including structural and miscellaneous steel, stainless steel, bronze, brass, aluminum, glass, specialty finishes, and other materials required for custom ornamental metal scopes.
You'll solicit and evaluate installation subcontractor bids, manage contracts, and review invoices.
And you won't manage entirely from behind a desk. You'll regularly visit active jobsites, working with our Installation Manager and field teams to understand progress, verify field conditions, address issues, and monitor schedule, quality, safety, budget, and customer satisfaction.
As a Senior PM, you'll also serve as a resource and mentor for developing Project Managers.
What We're Looking For
This is a senior-level position intended for someone who has already developed strong construction and project-management judgment.
We're looking for:
- Minimum of 5 years of Project Management experience in commercial construction, specialty contracting, ornamental metals, architectural metals, structural/miscellaneous metals, or a related field
- 7–10 years of commercial construction experience preferred
- Experience coordinating engineering/detailing, fabrication, material procurement, finishing, and field installation
- Experience with custom fabricated metal scopes such as stairs, railings, guardrails, screens, canopies, decorative metalwork, structural components, or similar architectural features preferred
- Strong understanding of project budgets, forecasting, cost control, billing, and change management
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, architectural and structural details, specifications, contracts, and scope documents
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects without losing control of details
- Strong organization and documentation practices
- Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions when every answer isn't immediately available
- Ability to communicate expectations, problems, and solutions clearly with customers, General Contractors, subcontractors, field teams, and internal departments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, project-management software, and ERP systems
A High School Diploma or GED is required. A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field is preferred.
PMP or equivalent project-management certification is a plus.
What Makes Someone Exceptional in This Role
The strongest Senior Project Managers don't wait for problems to reach them.
They understand their projects well enough to recognize when something doesn't look right. They ask questions early. They understand how engineering decisions, material selections, fabrication requirements, field conditions, and schedule changes affect project cost and execution.
They know when to push for an answer and when they have enough information to make the decision themselves.
They're comfortable having difficult conversations when necessary and don't confuse keeping everyone happy with successfully managing a project.
They can move between a project budget, a set of shop drawings, a fabrication question, a General Contractor meeting, and a field installation issue while maintaining a clear understanding of the larger project.
Most importantly, they take ownership.
