  • Job Summary:** The Lead RN is member of the nursing leadership team for Urgent Care at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center. Working with the other Lead RNs and the Nurse Manager, the RN in this position provides leadership, direct supervision, and training for the nursing staff in their program. The Lead RN acts as a charge nurse (shift supervisor) and provides direct patient care as needed to support Urgent Care within their scope of practice, to include IV therapy and parenteral medication administration, wound care, patient education, diagnostic studies, and triage of patient concerns. The Lead RN supports scheduling of the Staff RNs and CNAs for their program, performs employee performance evaluations, approves timecards and leave requests, verifies staff competencies, and follows TCC policies to address performance concerns. The Lead RN collaborates with the Urgent Care Nurse Manager and other staff to design, implement, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives. The Lead Nurse may temporarily act on behalf of the Urgent Care Nurse Manager as needed.

  • Representative Duties:** Under the general supervision of the Assistant Nurse Manager, job incumbent:
  • Supervises a cohort of Staff RNs and CNAs in coordination of care and patient visit optimization to provide high quality compassionate care in a team-based model.
  • Collaborates with the other Lead RNs to coordinate nursing staff schedules for Urgent Care.
  • Responds to patient complaints that may arise during clinic hours. Facilitates communication and resolution of concerns or escalates issues of concern to their chain of command.
  • Manages patient care and care coordination tasks by monitoring their own and team members clinical inboxes for pending tasks in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assists nursing staff when needed with screening and triaging patients, drawing blood, starting IVs, performing diagnostic studies, administering medications, and responding to patient and employee emergencies throughout the facility.
  • Schedules patient appointments and responds to patient check-in desk needs involving patient requests, collaborating with other staff, and ensures patients receive appropriate and timely care.
  • Performs nurse-only visits under medical standing orders for medication administration, diagnostic studies, patient education, care conferences, blood pressure checks, etc.
  • Informs patients of abnormal test results and documents patient education, follow up treatment, reporting to the State Div. of Public Health, etc. using standing medical orders.
  • Coordinates nursing activities during their shift in to ensure efficient patient care operations.
  • Coordinates scheduled shifts with the other Lead RNs to ensure seven (7) days a week coverage. Works an equal share of weekend shifts (at least one weekend per month) with the other Lead RNs to ensure daily coverage.
  • Collaborates with the Urgent Care Nurse Manager and other Lead RNs to ensure program-wide staffing coverage.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Alaska Registered Nurse License. Bachelor of Science degree in nursing strongly preferred.
  • Five (5) years of clinical experience, preferably in an ambulatory care or public health setting.
  • One (1) year of experience working as a charge nurse or equivalent clinical manager, or one (1) year of experience working as an R in TCC s Urgent Care.
  • BLS required. ACLS and PALS preferred.
  • Must pass background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirement and State of Alaska background check.

  • Ability to assess patients, set priorities, identifies and resolves problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills for managing workflow and maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to do interdisciplinary teamwork, work independently and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Leadership ability demonstrated by education and training or by practical work experience.
  • Supervision:** This position supervises RN, LPN, and CNA staff and may also supervise a variety of non-clinical staff roles. May be called upon to act on behalf of the Urgent Care Nurse Manager as needed.
  • Physical Demands:** Job incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in support of equipment and supplies. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, reading, handling, speaking, hearing, and seeing. Position may require extended periods of standing. Incumbent may periodically lift patients, with or without assistance, in the process of providing medical assessment of patient conditions. Job incumbent must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout Alaska, and nationwide.
  • Work Environment:** May be exposed to potentially violent patients. Potential risk for exposure to contagious diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Summation:** This position is responsible for supervising and supporting nursing staff, coordinating patient care, and ensuring high-quality, compassionate service. The role combines administrative duties with hands-on clinical care, management of daily operations, patient concerns, and supports quality improvement initiatives.
