Job Summary
Job Summary: The perioperative nurse has the responsibility to plan, direct organize, coordinate and implement all nursing care services for the Ambulatory surgical patients in a manner consistent with our mission statement. Nurses work within two or more perioperative nursing care services. Examples are: Operating room, Perioperative (pre-operative, and or Post-operative). The nurse’s responsibilities include all aspects of patient care prior to during, and following surgery. This care includes verifying paperwork, allergies and medication reconciliation, monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and respiration, as well as managing the pain and nausea that often follow anesthesia. These positions will also work in Sterile Processing and do preoperative and postoperative calls.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties: Under the general supervision of the Director of Ambulatory Surgery Center the job incumbent:
1. Admits, transfers, and discharges patients.
2. Completes ongoing patient assessment and documents according to policy.
3. Participates in the development of patient plan of care to include patient problems, goals, evaluations and interventions.
4. Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient’s condition to appropriate personnel immediately. Alerts Anesthesia or Director of ASC regarding suitability for surgery when concerns arise about a patient’s health history.
5. Assesses, collaborates and coordinates patient’s discharge planning needs and readiness for discharge with other members of the care team.
6. Demonstrates appropriate application of age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines in caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
7. Demonstrates proficient IV setting skills.
8. Follows age specific standards in administering medications.
9. Follows age specific standards of care during altered states of consciousness related to analgesia, conscious sedation or anesthesia.

1. Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director of ASC.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing and Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska.
2. Current in BLS, ACLS and PALS required (may allow 3 months after hire to obtain.)
3. Three years’ experience of independent working in the Operating Room or PACU.
4. Must pass background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to interact comfortably with of patients, and staff in a stressful environment
2. Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies located in the operating room and or the PACU.
3. Ability to work independently in two service lines within the ASC: Preoperative, Intraoperative, and /or Postoperative, one of which must be either Intraoperative or Postoperative to apply.
4. Ability to set priorities, identify and resolve problems effectively and efficiently.
5. Skill in building trust and develop consensus within the surgical team.
6. Skill in follow-through and organization.
7. Needs to comply /adhere to all applicable policies and procedures.
8. Must protect the privacy of all patients’ information as required by federal and state laws, including HIPAA-HITEC.

Physical demands: Extended hours may be required. Work is in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. May be subject to harsh environmental conditions Perioperative RNS may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious Diseases; they may be exposed to anesthetic gases, drugs and radiation. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system. Conditions include but are not limited to the following: Ability to routinely lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds. Fine motor skills and visual acuity. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time.

The applicant must possess the ability to deal tactfully with patients, families, physicians, and employees. Clinically proficient in pre-op, Intraoperative, and or PACU nursing skills by demonstrating knowledge of the development needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
