Job Summary
Job Summary: The perioperative Nurse I is responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe, effective, efficient, direct and indirect patient-family centered care through the intraoperative care. This position provides the incumbent with the resources and didactic support necessary to learn how to provide care for patients pre-, intra- and post- operatively. In this role, incumbent will be required to participate in didactic studies as well as clinical hands on experience. Average completion of the perioperative program is six (6) months and completes with a final exam requiring a passing grade. Any incumbent who has not successfully completed the training and completion exam within twelve (12) months of hire will be considered for removal from the position. Duties will include prepping patients prior to surgery, pre-op assessments, preparing operating rooms, liaising with healthcare professionals on patient care, learning sterile processing, with identification of instrumentation, and scrubbing in the sterile field. Additional education will be provided on the care and recovery of post-surgical patients in an ASC setting and providing patients with post-surgery instructions.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties: Under the Direct supervision of a clinical preceptor the incumbent:
1. Learns how to provide surgical patients with safe perioperative care in recovery, procedure, and operating rooms.
2. Stocks operating rooms with sterile surgical equipment, linens, and supplies.
3. Develops and implements nursing care plans for surgical patients.
4. Prepares patients for surgery by cleaning and prepping areas to be operated on.
5. Assists surgeons during surgical procedures.
6. Applies sterile techniques in handling medical instruments and equipment pre-, during, and post-surgery.
7. Collaborates with surgical teams and other medical professionals on patient medication and post-surgery care.
8. Updates patient files and medical records.
9. Assists with the ordering, maintenance, and safe storage of surgical equipment and supplies.
10. Provides patients with post-surgery care instructions and answering questions.
11. Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens.
12. Learn decontamination steps and sterilization steps within the Sterile Processing Department.
13. Learns environmental cleaning to include between cases and final (terminal) Cleaning techniques.
14. Needs to comply /adhere to all applicable policies and procedures
15. Must protect the privacy of all patients information as required by federal and state laws, including HIPAA-HITEC

1. Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
2. Current nursing license, in good standing with State licensing board.
3. Commitment to a two year agreement for employment with TCC in return for training as a perioperative nurse.
4. BLS required. ACLS must be completed within six (6) months of hire.
5. Experience in a Tribal Health Care setting preferred.
6. Must pass background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Supervision
Physical demands: Extended hours may be required. Work is in the medical clinic and Ambulatory Surgery Center. May be subject to harsh environmental conditions. Operating Room Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases and they may be exposed to anesthetic gases, drugs and radiation. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system. Ability to routinely lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds. Fine motor skills and visual acuity. Conditions include but are not limited to the following: Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, reaching and standing for extended periods of time.

Summation: Position requires the ability to communicate effectively with other members of the health care team. Position requires critical thinking skills and quick problem solving skills, in a fast pace clinical environment. The position is a trainee position with expectations that the applicant will attend a computer-based education and will complete a comprehensive clinical preceptorship. Must receive a passing grade on final exam and be willing to commit to a two year employment agreement.
