The Academic Advisor II within the Department of Communication and Journalism will drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. The selected candidate will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors. Possible projects for this role could include, but is not limited to change of curriculum and departmental honors. Salary: $49,500.00 Special Note: May have occasional activities or events on evenings or weekends. Opportunities to Contribute: Advises Students Advise students on academic goals, majors/minors, and future educational or career options. Guide students through academic policies, procedures, and requirements. Review academic records and assist with course selection and exception requests. Provide input on students’ academic standing and probation decisions. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date student records and advising notes. Delivers Student Success and Retention Strategies Proactively engage students through multiple outreach methods to share important deadlines, updates, and events. Connect students with appropriate academic, career, and wellness resources as needed. Monitor students’ progress toward degree completion and identify students who may need additional support or intervention. Plan and support advising, student success, retention events, and academic campaigns. Use developmental advising strategies to support students’ academic growth and success. Team Building and Support Assist with training and sharing information with new staff and student employees in the advising department. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Two years of academic advising or related experience. A well-qualified candidate may also possess: Experience in advising, Student Affairs, teaching, recruiting, or coaching. Experience in a higher education environment. Familiarity with student information systems, degree planning, and audits. Texas A&M University advising experience. Knowledge of academic advising principles, including NACADA standards, advising strategies, and student success outcomes. Understanding of curriculum requirements, degree programs, and campus resources. Strong communication, relationship-building, and ethical decision-making skills. Ability to advise, coach, and support students in goal setting, problem-solving, and academic planning. Skill in identifying at-risk students and promoting retention and success. Experience collaborating with campus partners and delivering advising programs, training, and events. Ability to use advising technologies, data, and reporting tools to assess and improve outcomes.
