Senior Project Controls Specialist
Overview
An established engineering and systems integration organization is seeking an experienced Process Controls & Automation Technical Lead to support complex industrial automation projects. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across multiple projects involving process control systems, industrial networking, instrumentation, and SCADA platforms.
This position is ideal for an experienced automation professional with a strong background in the design, implementation, commissioning, and support of industrial control systems within regulated process industries.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineering teams across multiple automation projects.
- Lead the design and development of PLC, HMI, SCADA, instrumentation, and industrial network solutions.
- Develop control system architectures based on client requirements and industry best practices.
- Program, configure, test, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications.
- Produce and review engineering deliverables including control narratives, electrical drawings, P&IDs, network architecture diagrams, equipment specifications, and bills of materials.
- Support control panel design, field installation activities, and system integration efforts.
- Lead system startup, commissioning, validation, and troubleshooting activities at customer sites.
- Ensure consistency and standardization of engineering practices, documentation, and project execution methodologies.
- Collaborate with project managers to support project schedules, resource planning, risk mitigation, and budget adherence.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for clients, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Support proposal development, technical reviews, scope definition, and project estimating activities.
- Participate in customer meetings and provide technical expertise during business development efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, associate degree, or equivalent technical training in Engineering, Automation, Controls, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience delivering industrial automation and control system projects within process manufacturing, utilities, infrastructure, or related industries.
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI development, and SCADA system implementation.
- Experience designing industrial control system hardware architectures and communication networks.
- Working knowledge of industrial standards, electrical codes, safety requirements, and engineering best practices.
- Ability to develop, review, and troubleshoot PLC logic, operator interfaces, process control strategies, and variable frequency drive configurations.
- Strong understanding of process instrumentation and control devices including flow, level, pressure, and analytical measurement technologies.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and client-facing skills.
- Ability to lead technical discussions and provide guidance to multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience supporting project estimation, proposal preparation, and scope development is beneficial.
- Willingness to travel periodically to customer and project sites as required.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in water, wastewater, chemical, food & beverage, power, manufacturing, or other industrial process environments.
- Exposure to multiple automation platforms and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with industrial cybersecurity, remote access solutions, and operational technology (OT) networks.
- Professional certifications relating to automation, controls, or industrial networking.
