Job Description:
Position Title: Medical Physicist
Work Status: Exempt
Department: Cancer Center – Radiation Oncology
Reports To: Chief Medical Physicist Occupational Summary
Provides comprehensive radiological physics support to the Radiation Oncology Department. Responsibilities include equipment quality assurance and control, clinical application of radiation therapy, and required documentation for safe and effective treatment delivery.
Supports brachytherapy services, including high-dose-rate (HDR) and prostate seed implantation, and assists in ensuring all departmental operations comply with state and regulatory standards. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) on all radiation oncology equipment, including linear accelerators, HDR units, CT simulators, and treatment planning systems (daily through annual checks).
  • Review equipment logs and respond promptly to malfunctions with appropriate documentation and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with physicians to ensure accurate delivery of prescribed radiation doses.
  • Conduct weekly physics chart reviews for all active patients and participate in chart rounds.
  • Review treatment plans with dosimetrists to ensure accuracy, safety, and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Assist with brachytherapy procedures, including HDR, low-dose-rate (LDR), and prostate seed implants.
  • Support advanced procedures such as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), total body irradiation (TBI), and respiratory gating.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, including equipment performance monitoring and workflow optimization.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including NRC (10 CFR Part 35) and state requirements; maintain all required documentation.
  • Monitor radiation exposure for staff, maintain records, and report to the Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Provide radiation safety education and annual in-services to staff.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including sterile technique for procedures such as prostate seed implantation.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and incidents immediately to leadership.

  • Master's degree in Medical Physics or a related field
  • American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification or eligibility

  • Primarily sedentary with frequent computer and close visual work
