Location: Annapolis, MD

Work Setting: Hybrid initially, with approximately 3 days/week in the office for training and mentoring, plus regular field travel

Salary: Up to $130,000 base

Schedule: Monday–Friday, generally 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

Experience: 3–5 years of Civil/Structural Engineering experience

About the Role

A growing engineering firm is looking for a Civil/Structural Forensic Engineer to join its team in Annapolis, MD. This is a unique opportunity for a civil or structural engineer who enjoys investigating problems, analyzing damage, and determining what actually happened.

Forensic engineering experience is NOT required. The company will provide hands-on training and mentoring to an engineer coming from a traditional civil or structural engineering background.

You will work closely with experienced engineers initially, then take ownership of your own cases and become an independent technical expert.

What You’ll Do

• Inspect residential and commercial properties to evaluate structural and building damage

• Determine the origin and cause of damage or structural failure

• Evaluate whether reported damage is consistent with the claimed event

• Review roofing, siding, windows, framing, and other building components

• Determine appropriate repair scopes, including what should be repaired, replaced, or removed

• Evaluate code, constructability, and other repair considerations

• Document site conditions, measurements, observations, and evidence

• Perform engineering analysis and calculations to support conclusions

• Prepare detailed technical engineering reports

• Manage cases from initial assignment through final report

• Communicate findings clearly with clients and other involved parties

• Professionally defend technical conclusions when challenged

• Continue developing your expertise through training and certifications

• Travel regularly for field inspections, with many assignments within approximately a 3-hour drive of Annapolis

What We’re Looking For

• 3–5 years of Civil or Structural Engineering experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Architectural Engineering, or a related field

• EIT/FE progress with the ability to ultimately obtain a PE

• Strong civil/structural engineering fundamentals

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Excellent technical writing and report-writing abilities

• Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills

• Comfortable working independently and making technical decisions

• Strong communication skills and professional confidence

• Comfortable with field inspections and an unpredictable workload

• Ability to remain objective when investigating disputed claims

Experience That Translates Well

Forensic engineering experience is not required. Experience in any of the following can be highly relevant:

• Construction defects

• Property damage

• Failure analysis

• Insurance claims

• Engineering consulting

• Building assessments

• Expert witness or litigation support
