SUMMARY:
The Camp Assistant supports the daily operations of youth camps by helping create a safe, engaging, and positive environment for all participants. Working closely with camp leaders, counselors, and the Camp Manager, this role helps organize activities, supervise campers, assist with setup and cleanup, and ensure that camp rules and safety guidelines are consistently followed. The Camp Assistant contributes to a fun, inclusive atmosphere by encouraging participation, modeling positive behavior, and providing general support wherever needed, including shuttling campers to and from activities.
In this position, you will help facilitate and oversee camping experiences for up to 40 youth throughout the Lake Tahoe basin. You will help supervise and provide leadership to counseling staff while being responsible for all campers during a 5day, 4night overnight program. A key focus of the role is safely guiding campers through outdoor adventures while teaching Leave No Trace principles, basic outdoor skills, First Aid awareness, cooking, camp setup, leadership, and teambuilding. This position connects youth to the outdoors, empowers them with real life skills, and supports their social emotional growth and problems solving abilities. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills are essential, along with a genuine enthusiasm for working with children and outdoor activities.
Minimum Qualifications
· Comfort staying outdoors for multiple nights and using basic camping equipment
· 2 years experience working with children, youth, and families from diverse backgrounds, supportive of a culturally diverse staff and environment
· Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally competent service delivery methods preferred
· Proven ability to plan, implement, and evaluate program delivery
· Ability and willingness to take initiative, work independently, and accomplish goals set by the Camp Manager
· Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills
· Love of the outdoors and outdoor education
· Serve as a positive role model for campers
· Review and sign all Camp policies and procedures
· Participation in staff training, meetings, projects, and evaluation sessions
· Successful completion of State of Nevada and FBI background checks and Child Abuse Prevention Training
· Minimum age: 25 preferred
· Wilderness First Aid or First Aid/CPR Certification (employer sponsored if necessary)
· Lifeguard certified (employer sponsored if necessary)
· Valid Driver’s License, clean driving record
· Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
Camp Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
Programming & Camper Development
· Plan & lead daily outdoor, teambuilding, and skill-building activities for campers & staff
· Create an inclusive environment that promotes social-emotional and physical development
· Encourage participation while recognizing physical, emotional, or developmental limitations, provide alternate activities as needed
· Facilitate problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership exercises
· Support campers in developing outdoor skills, self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership
· Facilitate daily program activities
Trip Planning & Activity Supervision
· Maintain and organize storage & maintenance of camp equipment and supplies, communicate inventory needs to Camp Manager
· Understand weekly schedules and activities; communicate plans, timing, and responsibilities to Camp Manager prior to departure
· Make informed decisions on the pace, intensity, and duration of activities based on camper ability, safety, and environmental conditions
· Modify activities for campers with additional needs to ensure participation and engagement
· Maintain appropriate camper-to-staff ratios and continuous situational awareness of group location, activity, and safety
· With team, monitor weather and environmental conditions, implement emergency procedures and evacuation protocols as necessary
· Mentor Camp Counselors and support their development
· Support with inventory, maintenance, cleaning, repair, packing and storage of all camp gear pre, during and post camp programming.
Safety, Health & Record Keeping
· Maintain safety and health protocols to ensure a safe camp environment
· Monitor campers for signs of physical distress, illness, or injury (dehydration, sunburn, insect bites, fatigue) and report immediately to Camp Manager
· Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, injuries, behavioral observations, and trip progress; submit reports to Camp Manager
· Ensure confidentiality of staff and camper health and personal information
· Understand and comply with Child Abuse reporting guidelines, ensure corporal punishment or any exertion of inappropriate power is never used
