What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Manager position at Tab and Slot?
Who You Are
A leader who earns trust by supporting the team first and holds people accountable with respect. Calm under pressure, a strong coach, and someone who takes ownership, takes the initiative to figure things out independently, and isn’t afraid to ask for help when needed.
Job Summary
Tab and Slot is hiring a Production Manager to run daily operations, including custom fabrication and managing CertiFlat welding table assembly for WeldTables.com order fulfillment. You will own on-time delivery, quality, safety, and cost, and build a team that runs the floor.
Responsibilities
Plan and deliver
· Build and run the production schedule across laser cutting, bending, welding, finishing, and assembly.
· Balance teamwork load between custom fabrication and weld table production.
· Keep WeldTables.com orders moving from entry to shipping with clear lead times, accurate order processing, and proper packaging to prevent shipping damage.
· Work with purchasing to keep material, hardware, and finishing inputs on hand without excess inventory.
· Communicate proactively, honestly, and professionally with customers and suppliers.
Quality and improvement
· Set inspection control points and hold dimensional and tolerance standards.
· Lead lean, 5S, and standard work efforts; teach the team to find root causes and fix them at the source.
· Keep work instructions, SOPs, and standard work up to date as processes change.
· Report throughput, on-time delivery, scrap, and labor efficiency to upper management weekly.
People and safety
· Coach and develop leads and team members, with the goal of leaders who run their areas independently.
· Enforce safety procedures for laser, press brake, welding, and material handling; run training, audits, and incident follow-up.
· Lead hiring, onboarding, cross-training, and performance reviews.
Quoting and estimating
· Own the quoting process: review custom fabrication RFQs and prints, confirm scope, quantities, tolerances, and finishing, and turn quotes around within our lead-time targets.
· Build accurate estimates of material, laser, bending, welding, finishing, and assembly time, plus outside services, hardware, packaging, and freight.
· Apply shop rates, overhead, and margin targets consistently, and set clear lead times and delivery commitments in every quote.
· Work with engineering on manufacturability, drawing questions, and DFM suggestions that lower cost; flag long-lead items and capacity constraints.
· Get supplier and outside-processor pricing, and keep material cost and scrap factors current.
· Follow up on open quotes, support sales and customers on pricing questions, and help convert quotes to orders, including review of purchase orders against what was quoted.
· Compare actual labor, material, and machine time to quotes after each job and update standards so future quotes get more accurate.
· Keep quote history, assumptions, and rate tables documented in the ERP or quoting system.
Equipment and systems
· Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs for lasers, press brakes, and welding equipment.
· Keep routings, labor, and inventory data accurate in the ERP and quoting system so the numbers can be trusted.
Required Experience
· 5 years in metal fabrication, laser cutting, or job-shop manufacturing, including 2 years leading a production team.
· Working knowledge of sheet and plate processing: laser cutting, press brake forming, welding, and finishing.
· Ability to read prints and understand tolerances, flatness, and hole-pattern requirements.
· Proven scheduling and capacity-planning skills in a high-mix environment.
· Comfort with an ERP or job-tracking system and Excel reporting.
· Hands-on quoting or estimating experience for custom fabrication, including costing, rate setting, and margin.
· Strong safety mindset, organized, and a clear, proactive communicator.
Preferred Experience
· E-commerce or stocked-product fulfillment experience alongside custom work.
· Lean or Six Sigma training; ISO 9001 experience.
· Associate or bachelor's degree in manufacturing, operations, or engineering, or equivalent experience.
