Job Description

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is looking for individuals to co-teach multiple sections BDJ 611 Cross-Platform Writing and BDJ 612 Audio News Reporting during Summer 2026 (Session II). Class meets for six weeks, Monday-Thursday 8:30am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-5:30pm from Monday, July 6 – Friday, Aug. 14 (3 credits each).

Course Description: The two courses are team taught and have overlapping content. One professor will teach the morning section; another professor will teach the afternoon section. These courses cover basic news reporting, writing for broadcast and web, Associated Press style, and radio newscast production. Students cover real news stores on deadline, using state-of-the-art digital audio editing equipment. Daily current event quizzes are also a feature of the course.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors required, master’s preferred.
  • Preference will be given to those with previous experience teaching a university level course.

Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
