POSITION SUMMARY: The Controller is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the Bank’s financial records and reports. This position manages daily accounting operations, prepares regulatory and management reports, ensures compliance with GAAP and banking regulations, and supports strategic financial planning. The Controller supervises the Accounting Department staff and works closely with the CFO, auditors, and department leaders to maintain strong internal controls and efficient accounting practices.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND REPORTING:

  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare or review all regulatory reports, including the FFIEC Call Report.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory accounting principles (RAP), and bank policies.
  • Assist the CFO with board and management financial reporting packages.
  • Prepare annual budgets and long-term financial plans.
  • Analyze financial results and provide insight on trends, variances, and performance metrics.

 

ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS:

  • Supervise general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliations.
  • Manage accounts payable, fixed assets, accruals, and expense allocations.
  • Oversee accounting for loans, deposits, and investments, ensuring accurate accruals and reporting.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Maintain accurate subsidiary ledgers for prepaid expenses, deferred income, and other accounts.

 

REGULATORY AND AUDIT COORDINATION:

  • Prepare schedules and support documentation for external and internal audits.
  • Maintain and document internal control procedures to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
  • Assist in responding to examiner and auditor inquiries.

 

COLLABORATION AND LEADERSHIP:

  • Supervise and train accounting staff, fostering accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Partner with Loan Operations and Deposit Operations to ensure accounting accuracy for all financial products.
  • Work with HR/payroll to ensure proper accounting and reporting of employee compensation and benefits.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and core system upgrades.

  • Must have strong, working knowledge of GAAP,
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Proficiency with typing and operating a personal computer.
  • Must have effective time management skills.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • B.S. in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in banking or financial services.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA, CGMA, or CMA certifications
  • Master’s degree in business administration
  • Working knowledge of Call Report preparation and bank regulatory reporting
  • Experience with public accounting
  • 10 Years of experience in finance and accounting
  • Experience in a managerial capacity

 

COMMUNICATION:

  • Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate information to Senior Management, the Board of Directors, and fellow co-workers both verbally and in written format so that others will understand.
  • Must practice active listening by giving full attention to others and understanding the information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Must be able to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work at a desk with a computer, typing, talking on the phone, usually simultaneously, throughout a typical 8-hour workday.
  • Must be able to work at least 40 hours per week.

 

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to accept criticism and remain calm and continue to work effectively with high-stress situations.
  • Must be able to identify complex problems, use logic, reasoning, and related information to evaluate costs and benefits of alternative options and choose the most appropriate solution.
  • Must practice self-control to maintain composure and avoid emotional, aggressive behavior even in very difficult situations. 
  • Must show persistence in the face of obstacles.
