The ideal candidate will ensure smooth running of the office and effective case management by providing legal services under the supervision of an attorney. The Legal Assistant provides high-level clerical support to attorneys by performing a variety secretarial duties and skilled tasks that may include preparing case information, tracking cases, supporting attorney’s trial proceedings, and establishing and organizing files.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Keeps cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database and case management software; confirming case status with attorney.
- Helps develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case; scheduling depositions; preparing and forwarding summonses and subpoenas; drafting complaints; preparing and filing discovery requests; preparing responses to opposing counsel; generating status reports.
- Keeps clients informed by maintaining contact; communicating case progress.
- Creates files to establish and organize case information.
- Maintains case and correspondence files.
- Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Detail-oriented and professional.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
- Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Basic understanding of office equipment.
- Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
- Flexible and adaptable in various situations and when interacting with many different personalities.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
- Knowledge of, or ability to quickly acquire, familiarity with the roles and function of the assigned department, and any specifically applicable laws or guidelines.
- Dependable with a respect to confidentiality and policies.
Education/Experience:
- High diploma required; Associates degree preferred.
- One year of legal office experience required; two years preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, grip and type.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
