Job Summary:          

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Construction and Electrical Teacher prepares high school students for entry-level careers or post-secondary training in the building trades. The primary focus of the construction pathway is geared towards residential carpentry, with an option for an electrical pathway. The ideal candidate will combine extensive industry experience with a passion for mentorship, teaching both the theoretical concepts and the hands-on skills developed in the construction lab that translates to modern construction and electrical work.

A primary focus of this role is establishing a culture of absolute safety, accountability, and professionalism in the school shop environment.

The program includes instruction in the following:  

  • Blueprint Reading, Estimation Skills, Hand and Power tools
  • Surveying and Site Planning, Framing, Roofing, Masonry, Dry Wall
  • Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Tile Setting, 
  • Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC
  • Weatherization and Green Construction

This program also includes training students in applied communications, and employability skills including leadership, human relations, and safe, efficient work practices.  SkillsUSA is the official Career & Technical Student Organization through which much of this training is completed.

Qualifications:  

  • The teacher must be certified, or be able to certify, as a Career & Technical Education (CTE) instructor in Construction Trades Technology.  Industry experience that indicates applied competence in the majority of the following areas: comprehensive knowledge of structural systems and processes, classical and contemporary construction elements, knowledge of industry standards, knowledge of architecture, basic cabinetry and millwork, and blueprint reading.  Idaho certification in one of the following areas preferred: 6108 CTE OS - Building Trades Construction (6-12), or Pre-Apprenticeship 5030 CTE OS - Electrical Technology (9-12), 6010 CTE OS - HVAC Technology (6-12), or  6015 CTE OS - Plumbing Technology (6-12).
  • Positive public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish the major duties listed below.

Candidates coming from industry who qualify for certification based on their industry experience will be placed on a limited certification and have up to three years to earn their standard certificate while teaching.  This process requires completing some training or post-secondary credits connected with the Idaho State Division of Career and Technical Education.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Successful experience working with students in a classroom setting that includes varying ability levels, including at-risk students.
  2. Provide instruction to all students using a variety of instructional strategies.
  3. Committed to collaboration with counselors, administrators and other teachers on student needs and highly effective instructional practices.
  4. Accommodate implementation of special services (IEP, 504) when applicable.
  5. Participate in staff meetings, staff projects and professional staff development.
  6. Commitment to a team approach in all aspects of educational programming.
  7. Communicate effectively with parents and students.
  8. Strong classroom management skills
  9. Perform such school-related duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
  10. Be knowledgeable of, and uphold all policies pertaining to teachers and students as specified in district rules and regulations.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter competencies and/or skills to be presented to students.
  12. Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students to the extent possible.
  13. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students within the limits of resources provided by the district.
  14. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate these objectives to students.  Upon request of the immediate supervisor, show written evidence of preparation.
  15. Use instructional materials adopted by the district and employ methods that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  16. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  17. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.  Follow prescribed safety regulations.
  18. Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  19. Accept responsibility for extra-curricular activities and other duties as may be assigned to meet the needs of students.
  20. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication and cooperative relations with the administration, students, parents and colleagues.
  21. Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees to plan instructional goals, objectives, and methods; assist in selection of instructional equipment and materials.
  22. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  23. Know and follow district policy and chain of command.
  24. Deal with students, parents, staff, and others in a positive, encouraging manner.
  25. Act ethically and confidential in all aspects of employment.
