POSITION TITLE: District-wide (PreK - 12) English Language Learner Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Principals and/or their designee
SUMMARY: Sutton Public Schools is in search of a 1.0 FTE English Language Learner Teacher to begin in the 2026-27 school year. The English Language Learner Teacher provides direct instruction and support to students whose primary language is not English in grades K–12. The ELL Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialists, administrators, and families to ensure multilingual learners develop English language proficiency while accessing grade-level curriculum and achieving academic success. Key responsibilities include assessing student language proficiency, developing and implementing individualized language acquisition plans, providing direct English language development instruction, monitoring student progress, maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, and supporting staff in the implementation of effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners. The ELL Teacher serves as an advocate for multilingual learners and helps foster an inclusive educational environment that values linguistic and cultural diversity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROGRAM
Curriculum: Know and be guided by the Massachusetts ESL instructional guidelines, the curriculum guides of the District, and the school.
Lesson Plans: Maintain a plan book of daily and unit instruction based on MA ESL guidelines, ACCESS testing results, and the targets developed for each student, and District curriculum guides (including emergency plans in the event of illness).
Objectives: Establish and communicate to students well-defined objectives for each unit of work, including related projects and activities, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that are developmentally and linguistically appropriate.
Instruction: Be responsible for an instructional program and the utilization of teaching methods that consider the individual needs, interests, abilities, and maturity levels of the students. Maintain records that support the language acquisition of the students, and work with the ESL coordinator to assure alignment to state requirements and data-driven student targets.
STAFF
Meetings, Trainings: Attend staff meetings and District in-service training programs.
Committees: Serve on committees as requested.
School Activities: Be responsible for discharging whatever instructional and non-instructional school-related activities may be assigned, e.g, playground, lunchroom, study hall, etc.
Supervision, Evaluation: Supervise and provide work assignments to teacher assistants and/or student teachers working under his/her direction, and evaluate their performance when requested to do so.
Confer With Staff Members: Confer with other staff members regarding their own experience with a given student during the team planning time provided. Participate in grade-level teacher/advisor conferences as scheduled by the Superintendent or their designee.
STUDENTS
Evaluation: Evaluate individual student progress on a regular basis and keep requisite records consistent with the area in which he/she is engaged.
Reports: Provide written student progress reports as required by SEI regulations. Work with the school to ensure proper translation of the document occurs, when applicable.
Health and Welfare: Take all reasonable measures to assure student health and safety, being alert to unusual mental or physical condition of students and referring these to the principal or his/her designee.
Learning Disabilities: When learning disabilities are suspected, request consultation with staff specialists, and provide each such student with a designated program of instruction when this is the recommended remedial measure.
Conduct: Be responsible for the conduct of the students in his/her direct charge, and for assuming authority, as warranted, over other students in such areas as school corridors, cafeteria, assemblies, or during away-from-school events.
Reinforcement: Provide instructional reinforcement for individual students as required.
Conferences: When deemed necessary, hold conferences with individual students and parents and in the preferred language.
OPERATIONS
Policies, Regulations: Know and observe the policies and regulations of the State and District with respect to education and to the specifics of English language education.
Pupil Attendance, Tardiness: Keep records of pupil attendance and tardiness and advise administration of excessive absences or tardiness.
Injury, Illness: Report any injury or illness to the student or self to the school nurse.
Attendance: Report to work daily at times assigned by the administration and remain on duty through the time prescribed by the contract. Advise administration before 6:00 a.m. before absence from school, and during the school day, do not absent yourself from the classroom, leaving students without supervision.
Books, Supplies: Account for books and supplies and keep required records of their quantity and condition.
Housekeeping: Observe proper housekeeping procedures and safety practices in keeping with building regulations.
Physical Plant: Advise administration promptly whenever an unsafe building condition is observed in class or school.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The employee must be able to remain stationary for extended periods and occasionally move throughout the school building as needed. Regular use of hands for typing, handling objects, and operating tools is required, along with sufficient grip strength for various tasks. The role involves frequent use of a computer and standard office equipment such as a calculator, copier, and printer. The employee must be able to enter data, read from screens, and review handwritten or printed materials, with or without visual aids. Clear and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues—both in person and over the phone—is essential. Strong visual and auditory awareness is necessary to ensure student safety and provide meaningful feedback.

Minimum of baccalaureate degree, master’s degree preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee will be working in a normal school environment with an acceptable level of noise. The employee interacts with students, parents/caregivers, and other staff members. While the majority of the work day is spent inside, the employee must spend time outdoors for fire drills and/or special activities.
